North Yorkshire is the largest county in England, famous for expansive green moors rolling across the countryside, rolling farmland, and a gorgeous coastline along the North Sea. The coastline is particularly picturesque, with dramatic cliffs, long stretches of sand, and nostalgic seaside resorts bustling with vacationers. Hunmanby is a North Yorkshire village nestled amongst bucolic hills, only 3 miles from the coast of Filey Bay and the longest beaches in the region. It's a quintessential English village, with walkable streets lined with centuries-old buildings, laid-back pubs, and restaurants serving British classics.

Its proximity to nature also makes Hunmanby a convenient base for a countryside getaway. The Filey Bay area is sprinkled with campgrounds, caravanning sites, and farms converted into cozy glamping cottages. A visit to Hunmanby offers a rustic experience in the rolling countryside within easy reach of the sea. It's ideal for slower-paced vacations, spending a day at a quiet beach and then heading back to your campsite for an evening barbecue or stopping for a pie at a village pub.

Hunmanby is sandwiched 10 miles (around 25 minutes by car) between Scarborough to the north and Bridlington to the south. Both are lively seafront destinations, with Hunmanby offering a more rustic escape. The closest international airport is Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), which is about a three- to four-hour jaunt on public transportation or a two-hour drive. Having a car allows for easier exploration of fishing villages up and down the coast, nature reserves, and pristine beaches, such as those tucked into the white-walled coves of the Bempton Cliffs, a short drive away.

Camping, dining, and exploring Hunmanby

To pitch a tent or park a caravan near Hunmanby, Saxdale House Farm Camping has showers, electricity, and other amenities, with sites tucked in a hedge-lined field 1.5 miles south of town. For a more luxurious countryside escape, Graffitoe Farm Holidays has three glamping pods, each sitting on a deck and fully equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and even a private hot tub on the patio.

Booking a guest room above a village pub is another option, and The Piebald Inn is the type of place where you can enjoy a hearty dinner after a long beach day and only have a few steps to climb into bed after an ale or three. Along with the guest rooms, the Piebald has more than 50 pies on its pub menu, with everything from venison and fish to vegetarian options. It's a true local institution, boasting a 4.5 rating on Google Maps with over 2,500 reviews, many of which praise the portion sizes and atmosphere. The terrace at The White Swan is another option for a quality pint and traditional roast carvery on Sundays.

Hunmanby is also home to the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, located on the village's southern edge. Famous for its Filey Bay Single Malt Whisky, the distillery manages every stage of the process, from growing the barley to bottling the finished product. Visitors can book guided tours and tastings, then stop at the Pot Still Coffee Shop for cakes or lunch (or both). The agricultural families behind the whisky also operate the Wold Top Brewery, located on a farm roughly 4 miles away. There, you can take a brewery tour (on Tuesdays and select Saturdays) and try one of their many award-winning beers, like the Scarborough Fair IPA.

Exploring the rolling hills and nearby North Yorkshire coastline

Hunmanby sits a few minutes from Filey Bay, which features the 4-mile Filey Beach, the longest bathing beach in Yorkshire, according to The Yorkshire Post. At the northern tip of the bay is the quiet seaside town of Filey, a Victorian coastal town with wildlife and gardens, which is a great option for beach days from Hunmanby thanks to its seafront promenade, restaurants, ice cream stands, and other attractions. You can also take a 1.5-mile hike from the beach to the tip of Filey Brigg, a rugged peninsula and nature reserve with sweeping views of the bay.

Hunmanby Gap is a broad, sandy stretch of Filey Bay just outside Hunmanby. It's a relatively untouched beachfront area below tall, grassy hills that slope to the sand. There are relatively few stores nearby, so don't forget to familiarize yourself with the ultimate packing list for a successful beach trip before visiting. There is a parking area at the top of the slope, as well as the Beach Cafe with its small service window and picnic tables on a deck overlooking the sea.

South of Filey Bay, Flamborough Head and the nearby famous white chalk walls of Bempton Cliffs offer some of the Yorkshire coast's most arresting scenery. Less than 20 minutes from Hunmanby, RSPB Bempton Cliffs attracts hundreds of thousands of seabirds from March to August, making it a premier destination in England for observing everything from guillemots and gannets to puffins and kittiwakes. Nearby, North Landing is a small strip of sand in a cove lined with white stone cliffs. For a more classic English seaside resort, nearby Bridlington is a coastal town with award-winning beaches, fresh seafood, and fishing.
