Why You Shouldn't Assume Everything Is Included At An All-Inclusive Resort

The term "all-inclusive" is often thrown around in the travel industry, especially by establishments offering an all-encompassing retreat. And the term is music to many a traveler's ears because, well, how could it not? When you are being sold a stay in an all-inclusive resort, it's easy to expect you'll get to indulge in a worry-free stay in a piece of paradise without ever having to whip out some cash or your credit card. But this is not the case — at least with some resorts.

To be fair, the items that usually take up the largest chunk of your travel budget are almost always included in all-inclusive resort packages. Think lodging, food, drinks (the non-alcoholic ones, at least), select amenities, and a handful of entertainment options. But anything outside of these cornerstone expenses? Unfortunately, you'll have to cough up extra cash.

Those chasing more upscale experiences should be prepared to spend extra. If you want to spoil yourself in the form of daily spa treatments, a room with a view, gourmet dishes like lobster, and drinks from the top-shelf, you can expect to part with more of your budget than you initially anticipated. You might even find transportation costs added to your tab unless you're in an incredibly exclusive establishment with an aircraft reserved for guests. In short, just because a resort markets itself as all-inclusive doesn't necessarily mean you can have your wallet tucked away for your entire stay. Generally speaking, experiences vary widely from one resort to another.

Other fees you might not be aware of

It's easy to give in to the temptation of booking an all-inclusive resort stay if you're of the mind that everything will be covered. But this can be an incredibly expensive mistake if you're not careful. Travel expert Alisha Prakash told Business Insider that travelers tend to have a more carefree attitude toward spending because everything else has been paid for in advance. "... by the time you arrive at the property, your travel budget is out of sight and out of mind, so when you're on the property, you might be a little tempted to splurge on an ancillary purchase," she said.

Relaxation should always be your priority, of course, but if you're also looking to save, it's important to practice mindful spending. "There are certainly things like resort fees that you should look out for. Resort fees are very common," Prakash added. "These resort fees can range anywhere between $4 to $50 per day." Be wary of room-related extras, including WiFi, minibars, and butler services. If there's a store on the premises, expect to pay a premium for essentials like sunscreen. And if you're partaking in water activities included in the package, accessories like goggles or sandals might carry an additional fee as well.

To avoid paying more than you should, always read the fine print. Understanding precisely what your package encompasses is the key to ensuring your all-inclusive retreat doesn't end with an unwelcome surprise on your final bill.

Make sure to budget for gratuities

Tipping is also a confusing subject when it comes to all-inclusive offerings. As with the case of package inclusions, it ultimately depends on the resort policies. "Sometimes people assume that gratuities for the restaurant and housekeeping staff are being covered by the all-inclusive fee, but that is not always the case," travel expert and content creator Kirsten Maxwell shared with Kiplinger. Some resorts already include gratuities in their respective package prices, while others adhere to a no-tipping policy. That said, it's always best to check ahead so you can budget for it accordingly.

Then again, even if gratuity fees are already part of the package, you still may want to tip anyway, especially to resort workers who have provided exemplary service. It doesn't even have to be the standard 20% tip, like what you're accustomed to. Slipping in anywhere between $2 to $5 can already go a long way in showing your appreciation to the hardworking staff who help ensure you're having a grand time.
