Sandwiched Between Omaha And Topeka Is Nebraska's Recreation Area With Lake Fun, Camping, And Wildlife

When thinking of Midwestern states such as Nebraska, images of a windswept, arid prairie land may come to mind. While the Cornhusker State is landlocked and is comprised largely of grassy lowlands, it is also abundant in rivers and lakes. Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area in southeastern Nebraska features a clear blue lake as its centerpiece and is a great place to spend the day or weekend. Thanks to the Nemaha Natural Resources District, one of Nebraska's Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) responsible for conserving the state's land and water resources, the 160-acre lake and grounds are well-maintained, clean, and family-friendly. The park is well-placed between Omaha and Topeka, Kansas, about 90 minutes from each city.

Upon arriving at the 500-acre recreation area, you'll see that there is a wide range of outdoor activities. Enjoy a picnic, sunbathe on the sandy beach, take a dip, or experience even more lake fun by launching your boat and cruising around the lake. You can camp in a tent or an RV, and enjoy sightings of native wildlife, including a variety of fish and waterfowl. An NRD interviewee on YouTube summed up the experience at the site nicely as "great, quiet, nice, relaxing, peaceful."

You'll have to purchase a permit before entering Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area, which you can do at the park's entrance or in advance online. The park is open year-round and has a range of amenities, including ADA-accessible facilities. There are covered picnic tables, barbecue grills, and trees for shade. Considering Nebraska is a surprising haven for snorkeling and scuba diving, Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area is also great for water-filled adventures. A sandy beach provides ample space to relax by the shoreline, while a kayak or paddleboat can take you farther onto the water. Zipping around on water skis or on a faster boat are also fine, as speeds of up to 35 mph are allowed.

There's a variety of camping options at Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area. You can set up right next to the lake with a tent, or you can camp with an RV at one of the electric sites. Non-electric sites are also available, along with drinking water and restrooms, which reviewers on Google note are clean.  Children can clamber around on the classic-style playground, or organize a game of volleyball near the beach. The NRD website notes bluegill, channel catfish, carp, and largemouth bass are all found in the lake, and a previous angler on Instagram was able to catch a trophy-sized crappie.

If you're planning to get into the water at Kirkman's Cove, keep in mind that there have been harmful algae blooms in the past. You can keep abreast of the situation via the Nebraska Water, Energy, and Environment's site, where they post alerts. Fortunately, staying by the water's edge can be just as enjoyable at Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area. In fact, Nebraska is listed as one of America's top birdwatching destinations, and you can watch out for waterfowl at Kirkman's Cove, such as Canada geese and blue-winged teals. Other anatids logged on eBird include wood ducks, northern shovelers, and gadwalls.

As an added attraction, Kirkman's Lakeview Golf Course is just up the road from the recreation area. Past golfers on Google rave about the "fun course layout" and gorgeous scenery there. The well-manicured, 9-hole golf course is open seven days a week, and has a slope rating of 114.  You can practice your swings at the on-site driving range, and prices are reasonable for a round. Tee times can be reserved online, but carts are available on a first-come, first-served basis at check-in.

Head to Humboldt to fill up on gas and stock up on supplies before heading to the recreation area. The small town is a mere 10-minute drive away, and you can load up on groceries there and check out the outdoor living section of the general store. If you're hungry right away, grab a bite to eat at Lizzi's Mexican-American Cuisine, which is well-rated on Google. Alternatively, make a pit stop at Kelly's Cafe, which serves diner-style breakfasts and hearty staples such as hamburgers and spaghetti. Experiencing more outdoor fun is also possible beyond Kirkman's Cove Recreation Area, as you'll find at the family-friendly Walnut Creek Lake and Recreation Area less than 30 minutes from Omaha.
