Between Liverpool And Manchester Is An English Town With Vibrant Parks, Shops, And Family-Friendly Fun

On the banks of the River Mersey, halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, lies the charming town of Warrington. Warrington received its market charter in the 13th century and was long famed for its weekly market, which is now a permanent institution in the town. Today, Warrington is a large and bustling town, with the entire borough measuring 70 square miles and home to over 215,000 residents. Still, it remains ideal for those seeking a lively destination outside of larger Manchester and Liverpool crowds, the UK's third and fourth largest cities, respectively. Here you can enjoy plentiful shopping opportunities, leafy parks, and family-friendly fun.

Warrington is anchored by the Palladian-style Warrington Town Hall, flanked by its fanciful golden gates that have been a symbol of Warrington since the late 1800s. In the heart of town, visitors can explore the new Time Square area where you can browse the modern Warrington Market, which brims with local vendors. Around the corner is the vast Golden Square Shopping Centre for British and globally-branded stores. 

Throughout the town, visitors will find vibrant parks for plenty of nature activities, from peaceful green spaces and canal-side trails to sports fields. In addition to the parks, Warrington also has plenty of dedicated family-friendly attractions, such as the Woodlands Alpaca Farm – which allows you to pet and walk with alpacas – Gulliver's World Warrington theme park, and Walton Hall and Gardens' zoo and playground.

Warrington is just a 35-minute drive west from Manchester and a 35-minute drive east of Liverpool. A prime time to visit Warrington's vibrant parks and outdoor fun is between June and August, when temperatures hover in the mid 60s Fahrenheit.

The commercial heart of Warrington is concentrated between Market Gate, the historic central square of the town, and the newer development of Time Square. Bridge Street runs through this central shopping area, with the pedestrian section between the two commercial areas lined with historic facades housing shops and restaurants. The star of Times Square is Warrington Market, which honors Warrington's centuries-old past as a market town. Warrington Market is an impressive permanent market that reopened following development in 2020; it is now filled with over 50 vendors. If you need some food to fuel up for more shopping, stop at the Cookhouse at Warrington Market, a food court at the market serving global cuisine. 

A block away, you'll reach the Golden Square Shopping Centre, a large shopping mall with over 100 stores that opened in 1979. If you want to continue shopping, drive about 20 miles west of Warrington to Liverpool ONE, a luxurious open-air mall that's one of the United Kingdom's best shopping destinations.

Set in the bucolic countryside of Lancashire, Warrington offers plenty of vibrant parks to escape the town's bustle. Adjacent to the Warrington Town Hall is Bank Park, a 13-acre park that boasts paved paths, bowling greens, and a children's playground. About 2 miles west of Bank Park is Sankey Valley Park, which runs along the Sankey Brook and former Sankey Canal. This is an ideal park for active travelers who want to hike or bike on the trail that runs along the disused canal. On the southeastern side of town is Victoria Park, which offers sports fields, a stadium, and a skate park where aspiring athletes can play soccer, run track, or practice their skateboarding skills. 

Families will be endlessly entertained by all the child-friendly activities in Warrington. The top-rated activity in Warrington on Tripadvisor is Woodlands Alpaca Farm, where children will adore walking the resident alpacas, admiring the farm's reindeer, and petting and feeding the goats, chickens, and other farm animals. Families will also want to make a visit to the bucolic estate of Walton Hall and Gardens, which has fun activities from a children's zoo to a mini golf putting green.
