An Alabama state park has been named the most budget-friendly in the Southern U.S. Located less than 30 minutes outside of Birmingham, Oak Mountain State Park earned top scores on HomeToGo's 2026 State Park Index, landing in fifth place overall out of 150 parks nationwide. The annual report spotlights the best state parks in the country for travelers seeking value, natural beauty, and outdoor adventures. The findings are based on various factors, including the median nightly cost of accommodations near the park, visitor satisfaction, and size. Each destination is also given a score for its scenery, wildlife, trail access, and hidden gems. With nearly 12,000 acres of forests, lakes, trails, and recreational facilities, Oak Mountain is undeniably a standout.

Finding an affordable place to stay can be a deal-breaking factor if you care about costs as much as the quality of a destination. According to HomeToGo's internal data, Oak Mountain State Park's median rate for nearby vacation accommodations is $68.21 per person, per night. The park ranked highly for its trails with a score of 9.84 out of 10, based on the total number of hikes listed on AllTrails. It was also given a visitor satisfaction score of 9.17, determined by Google and Tripadvisor reviews.

This winning combination helped Oak Mountain rise above many popular state parks in the South. For example, Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina, which ranked 28th overall, scored higher for its scenery than Oak Mountain, but fell behind in most other categories. Blue Spring State Park in Florida, known for its manatees, ranked 42nd. While it earned top marks for its wildlife and travel draws, it could not compete with Oak Mountain's hidden gem appeal, trails, and affordability.

It's worth noting that HomeToGo's affordability score applies only to the cost of staying near each state park in 2026, not necessarily the cost of admission or camping on site. This information is especially useful when planning a visit to Oak Mountain State Park — as Alabama's largest state park, it offers plenty of activities to fill a longer stay. You could spend several days exploring the park's 100-plus miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. For expansive views, head up to King's Chair, an overlook above seemingly endless forests. Relax by the water at the park's two sandy lakeside beaches, or get active at the archery range, 18-hole golf course, pickleball court, and floating obstacle course.

As for accommodations, travelers will find well-reviewed, inexpensive stays in Pelham, the charming and friendly Alabama city that hosts Oak Mountain. Best Western Plus Oak Mountain Inn has a 4-star rating on Google Hotels and costs around $80 per night. Sleep Inn Pelham Oak Mountain has 4.2 stars on Google Hotels and is also well under $100 per night. While accurate at the time of publication, these prices may vary based on the season, availability, and general pricing changes. Both hotels are around a 5-minute drive from the park's gates. There are also many options in Birmingham that are just as affordable, if you're willing to make the 20-minute drive to Oak Mountain.
