Tourists Are So Stuck On Seven Mile Beach When Visiting The Caribbean That They Overlook This Hidden Coastal Gem

Voted one of the world's top stretches of sand for 2026 by The World's 50 Best Beaches, Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is legendary for its soft sands, tranquil waters, excellent snorkeling, and restaurants and hotels lining its shores. Even if visitors are not staying along the beach, the Cayman Islands receive about a million cruise passengers per year, so Seven Mile Beach can get very crowded during the day. Travelers seeking a beach with similar qualities to Seven Mile Beach, but on a smaller scale and without the crowds or development, should venture to a different region of the Caribbean. Located on the southwestern coast of Grenada, Morne Rouge Beach is a hidden coastal gem that is a scenic alternative to both Seven Mile Beach and Grenada's larger and busier Grand Anse Beach nearby.

Morne Rouge's cove is known as BBC Beach to local Grenadians because of a popular beach club that once thrived there. Here, visitors can enjoy many of the same activities as at Seven Mile Beach but with a decidedly more relaxed atmosphere. Days can be spent lounging on the almost half a mile of powdery beach sand, swimming in the calm waters, or snorkeling along the rocks that line the bay. Dotting the shore are casual beach restaurants and two relaxed hotels that are just steps from the sand.

But while Morne Rouge Beach may be an under-the-radar treasure, it is easy to access. The beach is just a 4-mile drive from Grenada's Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND), which receives nonstop flights from U.S. cities such as New York, Miami, and Atlanta. While Grenada's southernmost location in the Caribbean archipelago means it is an island generally safe from hurricanes and temperatures hover in the mid 80s Fahrenheit year-round, the best time to visit is the dry season between December and April.

While Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach is a glorious stretch of powdery sand consistently called a world-best beach, it also comes with crowds and modern development. Morne Rouge Beach's charms are far more low-key, cradled by a verdant hillside. Due to this tropical canopy that runs along the shore, the curved beach is naturally shaded, and beach loungers are available for rent for a small fee. Morne Rouge Beach is public and has no entrance fee, but there is generally no lifeguard supervision, either. However, the shallow turquoise-hued waters invite peaceful swims due to the lack of waves. "We have visited many Caribbean beaches over the years, but this just has to have been the best," raved a Tripadvisor reviewer. "Very calm and warm water with gently shelving sand," they added.

Culture Trip calls Morne Rouge one of the best snorkeling spots on Grenada. While Morne Rouge Beach isn't lined with the seemingly endless resorts and restaurants of Seven Mile Beach, this idyllic sandy crescent still boasts a handful of casual beachfront eateries and small hotels. At the northern end of the beach, stop by La Plywood Beach Bar Cafe, a colorfully painted beach shack. From the cafe's picnic tables or bar stools, you can feast on fish tacos, chicken wings, signature salads, and burgers with fries. Set back from the sand under a canopy of trees is Rocky's Beach Bar, a beloved local hangout generally only open on Saturdays and Sundays, famed for its rum punch spiced with nutmeg and barbecued seafood and meats. Next door to Rocky's is Beach X-scape Bar, serving blended-up frozen cocktails.

If you want to stay directly on Morne Rouge Beach, there are also two beachfront hotels adjacent to each other on the northern edge of the shore. Kalinago Beach Resort is a family-owned beachfront gem with 29 rooms that honor Grenada's flora and fauna with colorful bedspreads, flowers, and nature paintings. The resort features a swimming pool with a swim-up bar and a beachfront restaurant.
