But some critics say it's actually one of the most "overrated tourist traps in the world." The place can get pretty jam-packed, drawing millions upon millions of visitors each year. On the other hand, the Mandalay Canal Walk at Las Colinas is an equally beautiful, yet far less busy, waterfront attraction right on the outskirts of Dallas. As one TripAdvisor reviewer shared, "The canals remind me a bit of San Antonio's famous river walk, but without the crowds and chaos."

The Mandalay Canal Walk is a beloved feature in Las Colinas, an affluent master-planned community in Texas' picturesque city of Irving, known for tasty local cuisine. The scenic canal walk is quieter and more intimate than its bustling San Antonio counterpart. The walkways wind along both sides of the Mandalay Canal, connecting with the broader Lake Carolyn Promenade, a new extended paved pathway circling the eponymous urban waterway for about six miles.

The Mandalay Canal Walk was modeled after the stunning Venice canals, complete with cobblestone paths and vine-draped bridges. Enjoy a walk down the tree-lined paths, tuck into a great meal with a spectacular view, or set out on a romantic gondola ride along the lapping canal. "The whole area has a charming European style atmosphere with ... waterfalls and waterfront restaurants that make the experience feel unique and refreshing," one visitor shared on Google. 

With its tranquil atmosphere and beautiful scenery, the Mandalay Canal Walk at Las Colinas could easily be considered one of the best attractions in Texas. Stroll down the Venetian-themed pathway and admire all the European flair, from the arched footbridges to the Italianate buildings overlooking the water. The wispy trees add to the ambience, and there are plenty of benches dotting the way if you want to sit down and enjoy the view. 

You can also take in the sights with a scenic sail. The tour agency Gondola Adventures provides a variety of excursions down the Mandalay Canal and Lake Carolyn, from classic rides to three-course Italian dinner cruises.
