The Happiest City In The Midwest Is A Historic Destination Filled With Endless Outdoor Beauty And Cultural Flair

When it comes to happiness, few things matter more than quality of life. Many U.S. cities have components of high-quality living, with countless options for entertainment, shopping, dining, and outdoor recreation. But quality of life is about more than just amenities. According to the 2026 "Happiest Cities in America" report by personal finance company WalletHub, many factors contribute to high quality of life, such as safety, work-life balance, and even adequate sleep. In America's Midwest, Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, checks all the right boxes.

To determine the results, WalletHub rated America's 182 largest cities based on 29 key aspects of overall happiness, backed by "positive-psychology research." These include emotional and physical health, employment, income, community, and environment. Aspects like job security, hate crime incidents, income growth rates, and depression rates were considered, as well as many others. The data was collected from various reputable sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, FBI, Feeding America, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Each city was given a total score out of 100 and a ranking in each category. 

Bismarck — an artsy underrated gem of eclectic dining and culture – scored 73.11 out of 100, making it the second-happiest city in America after Fremont, California. Bismarck ranked first overall in the "Community and Environment" category, and in fifth place for "Emotional and Physical Well-Being." According to the report, Bismarck residents enjoy the greatest amount of leisure time per day, on average. It also has the "ninth highest percentage of adults who report having good or better health." With so many natural spaces, cultural events, and attractions packed into one city, Bismarck's recognition is well deserved.

The Missouri River, one of the five longest rivers in America, lends Bismarck a lot of its natural beauty and scenic attractions, including a waterfront golf course, parks, and trails. The Missouri Valley Millenium Legacy Trail – known locally as the Riverfront Trail – covers about 4.6 miles along the Missouri River. The paved trail leads to several playgrounds and picnic areas, with waterfront views the whole way. Between May and October, follow the trail north to Chief's Looking Village for its scenic pergola, playground, and garden overlooking the river. "The trail just encompasses everything and offers that opportunity to maintain good wellness for the citizens around the community," said Bismarck local, Lynn Beiswanger, in a Rails to Trails Conservancy article.

The Bismarck area has ties to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804, and one way to enjoy the water is on the aptly-named Lewis and Clark Riverboat, which offers cruises up and down the Missouri during the warmer months. The sightseeing vessel hosts 90-minute daytime and evening cruises, many with meals included. The sunset cruises are particularly popular for beautiful views and photo ops. 

If you'd rather get active, book a tee time at Riverwood Golf Course. This 18-hole championship course on the Missouri River has dense forests lining its fairways and greens. Golfers often spot wildlife here, including turkeys wandering between the trees. Atkinson Nature Park is just south of the golf course and offers bird-watching opportunities amid peaceful woodlands. Walk along the 1.65-mile loop trail for the chance to spot kingfishers, bluebirds, flycatchers, and turkey vultures, according to past sightings on eBird.

Another highlight of Bismarck is its dedication to arts and culture. The city's artistic spirit is evident in many public spaces, particularly parks. You can admire vibrant murals in 16th Street Park, Kiwanis Park, and along the Riverfront Trail. The Riverfront Trail features five eagle-inspired public sculptures at various points along the route. The city also installed "Poetry Boxes" in several parks, where visitors can share their own poems or favorite works by others.

Every year, the city comes together for the Capital A'Fair, a weekend-long event put on by the Bismarck Art and Galleries Association. This family-friendly festival features live bands, food stalls, over 100 art vendors, and numerous activities like plein air painting, chalk art, and tai chi. Kids can also participate in button making, collaging, bookmaking, and dance workshops. Initiatives like these might be one reason why Bismarck earned the seventh-highest score on Sharecare's Community Well-Being Index, a significant indicator of resident satisfaction, according to WalletHub.

The city has a good selection of hotels, including some options closer to the Missouri River. As for America's happiest city, Fremont is an overlooked Western gem with laid-back locals and incredible parks. Visit both to find out which one leaves a bigger smile on your face.
