Escaping to Cherry Valley, a village located 20 minutes from downtown Rockford, one of the largest cities in Illinois, is one option. Home to the popular Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rockford (formerly known as Magic Waters) and other outdoor attractions, the village delivers a family-friendly excursion. Cherry Valley is ideal for enjoying warm weather days and that's not all; the village has a downtown area with a charming atmosphere and local eats to boot. 

If Cherry Valley sounds like your type of destination, you'll be happy to know that the village is only an hour-and-20-minute drive from the Windy City on Interstate 90. However, it should be added that Cherry Valley is conveniently situated near other Midwestern metropolises, including Madison and Milwaukee. Regardless of where you're traveling from, you can begin your day trip in downtown Cherry Valley, more specifically, Baumann Park. Visitors can stretch their legs at this tranquil green space situated along the Kishwaukee River.

Baumann Park features a lake with a 1.3-mile loop trail, and as a reviewer on Google explained, "The kids enjoyed the play area, which was well-maintained and fun, while the adults appreciated the walking path." Additionally, this body of water is a popular place to fish for all ages, with users on Google writing that they have caught panfish, largemouth bass, and other varieties. 

Baumann Park is nestled next to downtown Cherry Valley's State Street, a brick road flanked by pretty streetlights and local eateries. For hungry day trippers, this means a good meal is just around the corner. Salamone's Cherry Valley is a family-owned Italian restaurant with a 4.7-star rating on Google (based on more than 1,200 reviews). Boasting a sophisticated black and white aesthetic, this restaurant was described by one individual as "top notch," while another explained, "Every course was delicious. From the salad to the desert [sic] to the drinks." The chicken picatta is a popular pick, but if you're craving a heartier pasta dish consider the Tour of Italy, which includes fettuccine alfredo and lasagna served with chicken parmigiana. Plus, as Salamone's Cherry Valley has a menu for kids, this is a dinner spot the whole family can enjoy.

Cherry Valley Cafe keeps things classic. "The place is warm, friendly. Clean, and reminiscent of an old style diner from the 50s and 60s," states a review from Google. Cherry Valley Cafe serves breakfast all day, including Mickey Mouse pancakes for kiddos. Likewise, the eatery is known for its fish fry, a Friday special.

Dessert and coffee are available at My Cafè Amorè, a pink painted space with book-covered walls. My Cafè Amorè offers creative themed drinks and pastries. Hurricane Harbor Rockford features attractions like the rainbow-colored Riptide Rush, presenting riders with an aerial view of the water park before they slide down the 75-foot structure.
