Forget Florida, Retire To Louisiana's Urban Gem Near The Texas Border With Senior-Friendly Fun And Affordable Living

Florida may seem like the most ideal retirement destination in America. According to Hire A Helper data, the state attracted over 45,600 new retirement-age (65 or older) residents in 2025. However, an almost equal number of Florida residents in that age bracket moved out of the state that same year. So, clearly, the Sunshine State is not for everyone. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternative retirement destinations throughout the country. One place that's received recent attention for retirees is Bossier City, a Louisiana gem just over 20 miles from the Texas border.

This riverside city was highlighted by U.S. News & World Report as one of Louisiana's best places to retire in 2026 and 2027. It's not the first time Bossier City has landed on retirement radars. In 2019, Shreveport Times published an article celebrating the city being selected as a top retirement destination by Where to Retire magazine. While the magazine focused on places helping retired veterans, it still showed how Bossier City can support all retirees with its small-town atmosphere, friendly locals, outdoor activities, and inner-city attractions.

Despite being located along the Red River, Bossier City has a distinct urban feel with its waterfront casinos; boardwalk shops; and East Bank entertainment district filled with restaurants, bars, and attractions. Intermittent high-rises tower above the water, where trees are interspersed amongst various modern buildings. It can all appear a little drab when viewed from afar, but look closer and you can find a senior-friendly community and fun retirement activities. All this also comes at a much more affordable cost than moving to Florida.

Both Bossier City and Shreveport share the Red River, one of America's largest rivers. Together, these cities have been recognized as an official Louisiana Certified Retirement Community by the Louisiana Office of Tourism. Bossier City does its part, offering multiple highly rated retirement communities. The city also has its Bossier Council on Aging, which focuses on helping seniors live independently, with meals and social events at senior centers, discounted transport around the city, home-delivered meals, and temporary caregiving. The senior centers — Benton, Haughton, and Bearkat — are particularly good for finding fun activities like bingo, beanbag baseball, arts and crafts, group exercise, and chair yoga.

The city also embraces its senior community at various places in town. Eddie's Tavern is considered one of the best spots for older crowds on Yelp. Part bar, part games room, it offers 25 pool tables, as well as darts, ping-pong, and yard games. Retirees can enjoy free pool all day on Mondays or join the billiards league for a more social experience. The bar also hosts karaoke nights and serves plenty of quality beers and classic bar eats. As of this writing, you can get $3 domestic beers every weekday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., too.

Retirees also appreciate Bossier City for its relatively consistent year-round climate. While summers can get very muggy, with humidity upwards of 90%, winters are short and mild. "Main thing I like is the climate year-round. We don't have anything drastic," Sherrie Langley, a retired Bossier City local, told BeBossier.com. "It's not too cold and not too hot, perfect for an older lady!" When the humidity is agreeable, you can enjoy outdoor attractions like Red River National Wildlife Refuge. It offers largemouth bass fishing, hunting, trail hikes, boardwalk strolls, birding, and biking trails.

According to BestPlaces data, the cost of living in Bossier City is more than 15% lower than the national average and 5.6% lower than the state average. SoFi estimates you'll need a little over $5,200 a month to live comfortably in Florida. This is $2,000 more a month than what BestPlaces estimates for Bossier City. "I thought about going to Florida or someplace else but if I lived elsewhere, I'd probably have to live in a small apartment," Sherrie Langley shared with BeBossier.com. "Housing in Bossier is affordable and here I can afford a nice house."

Less money spent on necessities, like housing, food, and transport, means more to spend on enjoyable recreation and social outings. For instance, Bossier Parish Community College stages local theater productions, such as "Clue: The Musical" and a Creole take on the "Hansel and Gretel" fairytale. You can also browse a range of shops at Louisiana Boardwalk, a hub for national retailers like Under Armor and Bass Pro Shops. It's also a good meeting place, thanks to the Bossier Arts Council. This community hub hosts regular exhibits of works by local artists, as well as the annual ARTini, a community-focused fundraising event showcasing art, music, and mixology.

You can drive to Bossier City in about 15 minutes from Shreveport Regional Airport (SHV), which has flights from select U.S. cities including Las Vegas, Denver, Atlanta, and Orlando. Both Bossier City and Shreveport have plenty of accommodation options, including riverfront casino resorts. While you're visiting, you may also want to check out Homer, a charming small town with a scenic lake state park one hour's drive away.
