Forget Florida, Retire To Georgia's Vibrant Getaway With Growing Cities, Lake Fun, And Affordable Living

Oftentimes, when retirees dream of where to spend their golden years, Florida is top of mind. It has sunny, warm weather year-round and a multitude of outdoor activities. Florida also has no state income tax, which is a benefit to many on fixed Social Security incomes. However, that doesn't necessarily make it affordable. In 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis found that overall prices in the Sunshine State were about 3.4% above the national average. Luckily, retirees on a budget looking to live in the South have plenty of alternatives. For example, price rates in Georgia were 3.6% below the average, and Houston County is increasing in popularity, boasting lake fun with affordable prices.

In Houston County, retirees can choose from several growing cities. Warner Robins, the county's largest city, was home to an estimated 87,761 residents in 2025, which is an increase of over 9% since 2020. Perry and Centerville have grown even faster, increasing nearly 25% and 16%, respectively, over just five years.

Because of that growth, there are many ways to spend a day within the county without breaking the bank. In Perry, retirees can enjoy a leisurely afternoon at the farmer's market, its charming downtown, or one of its seasonal festivals. Warner Robins, on the other hand, is known for its Museum of Aviation. But beyond Houston County's cultural and historic attractions, visitors can spend time fishing, boating, or just sitting on a bench and enjoying one of Houston County's lakes.

Retirees often choose Florida for its white sandy beaches and warm weather. But despite being landlocked, Houston County also offers opportunities to be near the water. Houston Lake, located about 5 miles from Perry, is a low-key place to spend an afternoon. You can either fish from the dock or launch a boat from the ramp. A few benches around the lake also allow retirees to rest and enjoy the scenery. Additionally, several past visitors on Google have said Houston Lake is especially vibrant in the evening, with one writing, "The sunset is typically the prettiest looking towards the dam."

Lonice C. Barrett Lake at Flat Creek Public Fishing Area near Perry is another place retirees can spend time by the water, catching species like largemouth bass and channel catfish. One Google reviewer described the park as being "perfect for fishing, kayaking, walking, or simply enjoying nature and the sunset." The lake has a boat ramp, but you don't need to own a boat to enjoy fishing. Anglers can set up at the park's accessible fishing pier. However, if you plan to spend an extended period of time out on the water or along the shore, bring some bug spray, since the area is also known for mosquitoes. If you're interested in visiting another scenic Georgia lake with boating and fishing, Lake Blackshear is located just under an hour south of Flat Creek Public Fishing Area.

Houston County doesn't hold back when it comes to free and affordable attractions. Another must-see attraction is the Museum of Aviation near Robins Air Force Base, offering free admission and parking. Visitors often higlight the museum's wide selection of historic military aircraft, but one Google reviewer recommends that visitors should "wear comfy shoes as there's a LOT to see and lots of walking."

Staying social in Houston County is also quite easy if you're on a budget. Warner Robins Parks and Recreation has programs for residents and visitors 50 and older, including line dancing, mahjong, quilting, and water aerobics. Seniors visiting North Houston Sports Complex can exercise on its indoor track for just $1 or take a fitness class for $3. Perry has plenty of activities on the calendar for seniors as well. For example, the James E. Worrall Center hosts senior exercise classes, soul line dancing, square dancing, and bingo. 

Perry has many festivals throughout the year, including the Perry International Festival and the Bites and Beats Festival. One of the city's biggest festivals is the Georgia National Fair in October, which features livestock shows, food vendors, and live concerts. Guests 60 and over can enjoy a discounted rate when purchasing the tickets at the gate. If you're looking for a more regular event, the Downtown Perry Farmers Market takes place every Saturday year-round. Warner Robins, considered one of Georgia's best places to call home, hosts the Middle Georgia Literary Festival each February. The free-to-visit event features workshops, author appearances, and vendors for book lovers.
