Forget Napa Valley, Experience This Secluded Pacific Northwest Mountain Region With Award-Winning Wines

Napa Valley may be one of America's most famous wine destinations, but its popularity can sometimes overshadow the country's other exceptional regions. Crowded tasting rooms, heavy traffic, and an increasingly tourism-focused atmosphere can make it difficult to experience the quieter side of wine country. Washington's Red Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) offers a very different experience. Tucked into the high desert of the Pacific Northwest in south-central Washington's Yakima Valley, the state's smallest AVA produces some of the country's most awarded Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot, Syrah, and several other varieties in a secluded, serene setting. 

Red Mountain may be small, but its growing conditions are particularly well suited for crafting bold, structured wines. The AVA receives just about 5 inches of precipitation annually, but warm, sunny days help grapes develop concentrated fruit flavors. The region's sandy loam and gravel soils provide excellent drainage and contribute to the mineral character found in many of its wines. The landscape is rugged and dry, with the area's 15-plus vineyards climbing the slopes of Red Mountain, offering visitors sweeping views across the surrounding Columbia Valley.

The closest commercial airport to Red Mountain is Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) in Pasco, which is roughly 25 miles away. Driving is the best way to explore the region, particularly because the vineyards and tasting rooms are spread throughout the Red Mountain area. On your visit, spend some time exploring Pasco's riverside trails and exceptional food. 

Several vineyards and wineries have helped establish Red Mountain's stellar reputation. Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is one of the AVA's most celebrated sites, with vines dating back to the 1970s. Kiona Vineyards and Winery, established in 1972, was one of the area's pioneering wineries. Col Solare was founded by a 25th generation winemaker from Tuscany and it's an artful blend of the two regions and styles. It's also considered one of the 5 must-visit Pacific Northwest Wineries that could pass for the Italian countryside. 

Cabernet Sauvignon is the wine most closely associated with Red Mountain, and one of the most highly awarded Cabernets in the region is the 2020 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Argonne Cellars. In 2024 it took home the Double Gold award at both the Pacific Northwest Wine Competition and the Hilton Head Food & Wine Festival, as well as the Gold Award at the Winemaker Challenge International Wine Competition. One of the most celebrated blends is the 2021 HFE Red Blend from Hedges Family Estate, which holds the 2024 Double Gold Best in Class award from the Sunset International Wine Competition. Other popular varieties grown in the AVA include Grenache, Albariño, and Sangiovese.

Wine lovers can also time their trip around lively local events. Harvest and crush season is particularly celebrated — when vineyards are filled with activity as grapes are picked and processed for new vintages. Alternatively, Barrel Tasting Weekend offers visitors the unique chance to sample wines still aging in barrels. 

Red Mountain has limited lodging, but some wineries offer vineyard stays. One option is the Avennia Estate Guesthouse — which is perched atop Red Mountain and features a swim spa. Another option is to book an accommodation in the Tri-Cities area. The only 4-star hotel here is The Lodge at Columbia Point, which is located directly on the Columbia River and features 80 guest rooms, an on-site Italian restaurant, and a spa.

Just about 6 miles away is the closest town to the AVA: Benton City, a charming mountain haven with vineyard views and trails. The small community offers a range of activities and a dining scene with highly-rated vineyard restaurants like Terra Blanca Vineyard Grill, which landed in the top 10 Best Winery Restaurants of 2024 by USA Today and boasts beautiful views. The town also has local wineries and access to the surrounding Columbia Valley, which offers a trail network, parks, and other vineyards. Travelers can also explore the broader Tri-Cities area, where the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima rivers converge.

May through October is generally considered the most favorable time of year to visit Red Mountain for exploring the vineyards. Summers are hot and exceptionally dry, with daytime temperatures frequently reaching the 90s and occasionally climbing higher, so early mornings and evenings are often the most comfortable times to be outdoors. September and October are particularly appealing because harvest season brings activity to the vineyards while temperatures begin to drop to more comfortable levels.
