A Major Midwest Airport Just Raised Its Parking Rates

Travelers flying out of Kansas City International Airport (MCI) will need to budget a little more if they plan on leaving their cars close to the terminal. That's because MCI raised several of its daily parking rates on September 15, 2026. According to The Kansas City Star, Kansas City's Aviation Department said the rate increases would generate revenue to support airport operations and other expenses.

The biggest jump applies to valet parking, which increased from $35 to $40 per day. Meanwhile, garage parking went from $28 to $30 per day, and the surface lot also increased by $2 to $22 per day. While these might seem like relatively small daily upcharges, travelers considering parking at the airport should remember that they can add up over a longer vacation. At its new $22 daily rate, parking for a seven-day trip would cost $154. The garage, which has more than 6,000 spaces directly beside the terminal, would cost $210 for a week under the new $30 rate.

The increase comes after a particularly busy summer at MCI. On July 12, the airport recorded its busiest outbound travel day ever, according to Kansas City Aviation, with 24,266 passengers flowing through after Kansas City's 2026 FIFA World Cup matches. Frequent travelers can sign up for these parking perks to earn points each time they park in the garage, surface lot, and economy lot. It's free to sign up, and the points can be redeemed later for free parking in all of those lots plus valet parking and Park Air Express.

Travelers familiar with Kansas City International Airport (also one of the few U.S. airports that doesn't have TSA) may remember that parking in the economy lot would only run you $7.50 a day back in 2024. That same year, the surface lot was priced at $18 a day. That means the latest increase has bumped the surface lot pricing $4 higher over two years, while economy parking has risen by $1.50. However, travelers on a budget still have one easy way to avoid the new rates. MCI's Economy Lot is still just $9 per day, and the Kansas City Aviation Department reportedly claims the economy lot offers one of the best airport parking rates around. Park Air Express rates are also staying the same, at $10 per day for outdoor parking and $20 for indoor parking.

Deciding where to park at MCI depends on your budget and timing. The economy lot has more than 15,000 spaces, but travelers need to take a complimentary shuttle to get to the terminal. MCI says its blue economy buses operate 24/7, with buses coming through approximately every 20 minutes. The buses are wheelchair accessible, and the parking lot offers enclosed shelters for travelers to wait.

Meanwhile, the surface lot provides a middle ground for travelers who want to be within walking distance of the terminal without paying to park in the more-expensive garage. If you're heading to MCI for more than a few days, it's worth doing the math before automatically heading toward the garage. On the other hand, travelers who don't mind splurging might consider valet parking at $40 a day for the most convenience.
