Although there are plenty of big chains in Apple Valley, the city's independent stores showcase its vibrant spirit. Dutch Door Vintage, rated 4.5 stars on Google, is a mother-daughter-owned establishment where you can temporarily take a journey back in time. Uniquely, this antique store is only open four days each month, with a theme that is typically based on the season. Another reason to add Dutch Door Vintage to your itinerary? It's across from Charming Lily Boutique & Gifts. "If you love shopping local, this is one to hit up," reads a review from Google. This family-owned store carries both men's and women's clothing in sporty and cozy styles, along with Minnesota-themed items such as candles and puzzles. However, if you enjoy sweets as souvenirs, Abdallah Candies crafts caramels and truffles that come packed in pretty boxes. Dating back to 1909, the family-owned company got its start in Minneapolis but is now based in Apple Valley.

Dessert is secured, but how about lunch or dinner in Apple Valley? Once again, you'll want to avoid franchises in favor of top-rated local joints. While Apple Valley is perhaps not as diverse as the melting pot city of Minneapolis, visitors will still find a variety of flavors. Take Satay 2 Go, which holds a 4.8-star rating on Google. Its menu spans Asian dishes ranging from Singapore-style noodles to Vietnamese banh mi. "OMG this place is fantastic! We just randomly googled a place to eat after visiting the zoo and it did not disappoint," states one review. However, this reviewer and others note that Satay 2 Go has very limited seating, so you might have to wait for a table when you go.

Minnesota is famously referred to as the Land of 10,000 Lakes," and MN Fish & Chips serves fish commonly found in the state's waters like catfish, walleye, and perch, alongside waffle fries. "The fish was the perfect size with the best crispy batter and we could see them making it so knew it was as fresh as it could be," states a review of this casual spot on Google. 

Do you have burgers or breakfast on your mind? You can satisfy this craving at Valley Diner, an immigrant-owned eatery decorated with records and photos of retro pop culture icons. Reviewers on Google swear by the hash browns – breakfast is served all day — and the Mediterranean-inspired gyro omelet topped with feta. One reviewer even said, "If we didn't live 70 miles away, we'd be regulars."

Apple Valley's selection of local shops and eateries is a major plus. Nevertheless, the Minnesota Zoo is arguably the city's star feature. Opened in 1978, it has been called one of the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The zoo is home to over 4,500 animals, varying from bison to bald eagles. It also has an aquarium-like space, Discovery Bay, with sea lions and other marine life. The Treetop Trail is another highlight, allowing visitors to traverse the Minnesota Zoo from above, offering views of the site's rich natural beauty and the creatures that call it home. 

However, this is only the tip of the iceberg (there are, after all, 485 acres to cover). The Minnesota Zoo is open year-round, and tickets can be purchased online. It should be pointed out that the Minnesota Zoo neighbors Lebanon Hills Regional Park, which offers trails, swimming, and camping. Although the Lebanon Hills Campground is only open from May to October, there are hotels nearby, including the AmericInn by Wyndham Apple Valley. Apple Valley is also less than 30 minutes away from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, famously friendly and a destination unto itself.
