If you need a break from Chicago's busy waterfront, drive 50 miles north on Interstate 94 to Pine Dunes Forest Preserve in Lake County. Just short of the Wisconsin state line, the preserve stretches across 956 acres of protected land, surrounded by oak-hickory forests, open meadows, and savannas. Pine Dunes Forest Preserve is located in Antioch, a laidback lakeside village sandwiched between Chicago and Milwaukee. The park opens every day from 6:30 a.m. to sundown, giving visitors enough time to explore. This is a low-key preserve with no camping or fishing, but guests can hike, bike, ride horses, and ski in the winter. Several benches provide spots to rest, and restroom facilities and drinking water are available as well. Roughly 3 miles of trails loop through the preserve's mix of open prairies, hardwood forests, and wetlands.
