This Vibrant German Park Has Lush Gardens, Scenic Lakes, And Rolling Hills Tucked In The Heart Of Berlin

Berlin is characterized by its industrial architecture, grand boulevards, warehouse clubs, and Berlin Wall memorials, but what some snapshots might not tell you is just how green it is. Over a third of the German capital is green space, making it easy to get away from the noise and concrete for a while to walk among tree-lined paths and gardens. 

If you're looking for a unique park that's especially beautiful in its design, consider spending a day at Britzer Garten in southern Berlin. The 222-acre grounds feature gentle hills, flower gardens, groves, and lakes, with little surprises like a model boat harbor and an abundance of art installations. When your feet get tired, unwind in the sculpted, concrete grottos that are scattered around the grounds or take a small train across the park.

Britzer Garten was created for the German Federal Garden Show in 1985 — in other words, it was designed to show off the capital's landscaping ambitions. Every hill, lake, and meadow was intentionally placed. While the park was in development, it also hosted an art competition, leading to about 40 original works being placed around the grounds, from a giant sundial installation to a limestone dragonfly throne. There are also amenities for light outdoor recreation, including walking paths, table tennis, and fitness stations. Britzer Garten is within reach of the city center, located in Neukölln, the eclectic heart of bohemian Berlin. It's about 45 minutes from the central neighborhood of Mitte on a mix of subway and bus.

Britzer Garten is distinctive because its green spaces aren't concentrated into a single botanical garden. Instead, they're spread out around the park as little horticultural worlds. In addition to more traditional rose and perennial gardens, there are a couple of unique, themed sites. The Geological Garden takes visitors through geological history in an ammonite-shaped spiral, with water flowing from a spring in the center alongside rocks from different eras. The Witch's Garden contains ingredients you might find in a spell book: medicinal herbs; medieval, ornamental foliage; and plants historically linked to witches and demons.

When Britzer Garten was being planned, the public's most frequent request was to have a big lake in the middle of it. The resulting central lake curls between the park's hills, often teeming with waterfowl like coots and herons. The shoreline has its own discoveries: paths winding past reeds, wooden footbridges, and the model boat harbor, where hobbyists send off model boats on weekends from April through October. Watching the event is just one solo-friendly outing in Berlin, which has been ranked the world's best destination for solo travel.

Another fun fact about Britzer Garten's creation: When the lake basin was excavated, the leftover soil was used to form three hills around it. Climb paths up to the top for views across the lake and city beyond as the sun sets. After the park closes, your fun has just begun, as Berlin is made for exploring after dark.
