In The Heart Of California's Sonoma County Is An Idyllic Beach In A Redwood Forest With Camping And Cabins

Northern California's expansive Sonoma County encompasses 1,575 square miles north of San Francisco and is renowned as a world-class wine region. Beyond sipping wine in the vineyards, though, is an opportunity to explore its scenic surroundings dotted with towering trees, riverfront landscapes, and Pacific Ocean coastline. Sonoma County Tourism's website dubs it a "Russian River tradition" while reviewers on Google Maps highlight its water activities, ability to handle crowds, and facilities among reasons to visit — one reviewer says it's "probably the best beach on the Russian and a destination for all forms of river recreation."

Johnson's Beach is a popular summer day trip spot for river floating, swimming, and paddling daily from June through September. There is parking fee of $10, as of this writing. You can rent kayaks, canoes, inner tubes, and umbrellas and chairs for a daily fee which can be booked online. If you bring your own equipment, ensure each person also has a life jacket, as required by safety regulations. There's a roped-off shallow swimming area that's ideal for children and novice swimmers, and deeper water for experienced bathers. Pets are not permitted on the beach, but are allowed in the campground for a fee, provided they are leashed and not left unattended.

You can pack your own food and non-alcoholic beverages for your beach day, with outside alcohol, barbecues, and glass containers restricted. A snack shack offers items such as hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, and Sonoma County beer and wine, as well as live music. There are more eateries and activities conveniently within walking distance on the main street of Guerneville – a summertime haven with redwoods, calm river waters, and vineyards.

Johnson's Beach's overnight accommodation choicesare part of its charm and appeal. These range from rustic cabins to tent campsites. Choose a Historic Bungalow — a 1920s wood-framed cabin featuring a private deck and kitchenette with configurations including queen or double beds — or a 170 square foot Tiny Cabin designed for up to two guests with a king bed, mini fridge, and private bathroom and showers. Groups and families of up to eight guests can reserve a Classic Beach Lodge, which features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a full kitchen.

You can have a glamping experience in one of 10 Canvas Cabana style tents, which rest on redwood slats. These include a queen bed and a porch out front — some of which have river views. There are also 10 traditional camping spots for tents spread over three acres, with access to shared restrooms and showers for glampers and campers. Each cabin or campsite has its own fire pit or picnic table. One reviewer on Google Maps shared, "The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming (especially Chris). The location is fantastic ... making it easy to come and go."

Johnson's Beach and the Russian River lie in California's breathtaking river valley, which boasts bold wines and serene, riverside picnic spots. You can also head 14 miles west to Jenner, a beach town with kayaking, cliff hikes, and shores dotted with seals.
