The Happiest East Coast State In 2026 Isn't Florida Or North Carolina
States like Florida and North Carolina have plenty to brag about, but neither ranks as the happiest state on the East Coast. At least, not according to WalletHub's 2026 rankings. That title goes to a state farther north that has plenty to brag about in its own right. New Jersey may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about happy states, but the Garden State just might surprise you. It beat out all the other states on the East Coast (and ranked second only to Hawaii nationwide) on WalletHub's 2026 list, which is a pretty impressive feat.
WalletHub scored states based on factors that influence happiness, like rates of depression, unemployment, and income growth. The Miami-based personal finance company ranked New Jersey first nationwide for depression, and it also scored highly on things like life satisfaction, income, and food security. Taken together, it is no wonder that New Jersey is a great place to live and to visit.
Beyond the factors that propelled it to the upper echelons of WalletHub's 2026 ranking, New Jersey offers plenty in terms of entertainment and attractions. It's got the seashore, great beaches along the coast, beautiful mountains, and lush forests inland, along with plenty of great things to see, eat, and do. Sure, Florida (ranked No. 21) and North Carolina (No. 14) can check off all these boxes, but pair them with New Jersey's overall emotional and physical well-being, and you've got a winning combination for a happy place to visit.
Why is New Jersey such a happy state?
If New Jersey calls to mind little more than the Jersey Shore, you're missing quite a bit of what makes the Garden State so special. Of course, it is home to some amazing boardwalks with great views and family fun — with 130 miles of coastline, that's inevitable. But in addition to spots like Atlantic City (home to what has long been called the longest boardwalk in the world), the coast is also home to little-known hidden gems that don't get nearly the attention they deserve. Corson Inlet State Park, which sits off the beaten path on a barrier island with untouched dunes and wildlife, is a great example.
New Jersey's attractions extend well beyond its beaches and boardwalks. The state has quirky roadside attractions like Lucy the Elephant, a giant elephant that can be toured from the inside, the world's second largest light bulb (located in Edison Township), and Liberty in Distress, a nude allegorical sculpture of Lady Liberty at Atlantic City's World War I Memorial that depicts the horrors of war.
When it comes to the outdoors, New Jersey has adventures in spades. According to the Department of Environmental Protection, 40% of the state is forested, which is pretty impressive for the nation's most densely populated state. That means plenty of camping and hiking, along with swimming, fishing, and boating at the state's numerous lakes, many of which have fun names like Fairy Lake and Lake Surprise. Add cities with great culinary and live entertainment scenes, casinos and theme parks for blowing off steam, and museums and other cultural institutions throughout the state, and there is a lot to smile about in New Jersey.
