Under An Hour From Baltimore Is Maryland's Island Nature Park With Fishing, Wildlife, And Beach Beauty

The Chesapeake Bay is the country's largest estuary. The 200-mile-long waterway flows through Maryland before passing Virginia en route to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, it goes by large port cities, small fishing towns, and numerous islands. The bay's largest island is now home to Terrapin Nature Park, where you'll be mesmerized with the views and wildlife.

Kent Island, which is known for seafood and coastal trails, is a 31.2-square-mile island in Queen Anne's County on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The island was occupied by the Matapeake people before European settlers established the Old Line State's first permanent settlement in 1631. That original trading post led to corn and tobacco farms and, eventually, jobs along the water. Stevensville, on the northern tip of the island, became a center for steamboats after it was founded in 1850. The small town, directly across the bay from Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, is now a picturesque spot where life revolves around the water.

In 1983, Queen Anne's County bought 450 acres of land along the bay in Stevensville, which has laid-back marinas, great restaurants, and Chesapeake Bay beauty. A regional park, Terrapin Nature Park, was created on 275 of those acres. They include nearly 5,000 feet of shoreline and 73 acres of wetlands. Everything from ospreys to swans, white-tailed deer, horseshoe crabs, and muskrats now live in its tidal marshes. Migrating birds, like raptors and warblers, use it as a pit stop throughout the year, too. 

Terrapin Nature Park is beloved for its views. You can enjoy them by following the Terrapin Nature Park Loop. This nearly 3-mile trail crosses over dirt, sand, and oyster shell pieces as it moves through meadows, woodlands, and a golden-sand beach. Unfortunately, swimming is prohibited, though the beach does provide a magnificent view of William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bay Bridge, also known as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It's a "beautiful little hike in my cherished island," according to one Google reviewer.

As you continue along the trail, you'll find benches and a gazebo, tidal ponds, and wetlands. There are also designated areas where you can go fishing. You might catch a largemouth bass inland and a catfish along the shore. There's no cost to visit Terrapin Nature Park, which is open from sunrise to sunset each day. You will need a Chesapeake Bay & Coastal Sport Fishing License to go fishing in its tidal waters.

Terrapin Nature Park is an easy drive from both Maryland's largest city and airport. Baltimore, a popular East Coast city known for its harbor and seafood, is less than 45 miles away, while Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), which receives nonstop flights from all around the country, is even closer. From either, you'll cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to reach Stevensville on Kent Island. You can see the waterfront nature park to the north as you descend from the bridge.
