Greece's Abandoned Airport Site Is Transforming Into A Vibrant Park With Coastal Vibes And Green Spaces

With how much humans are impacting the natural environment, it's refreshing to see cities breathe new life into urban spaces that have long been abandoned and forgotten. The ambitious transformation of the former Ellinikon International Airport site into The Ellinikon, featuring The Ellinikon Park as a core landmark, is a prime example of this movement. The airport has been closed since 2001, and internet-goers on Reddit have often shared eerie photos of forgotten Olympic Airways jets sitting on the tarmac and dusty terminals frozen in time. 

That said, the plans for development alone are groundbreaking in their scale and ambition. The official project website refers to The Ellinikon as "A green city by the blue sea," which perfectly captures its distinctive Mediterranean setting. Situated along the southern suburbs of Athens, the development's layout leans heavily into its seaside setting to offer an authentic coastal atmosphere.

The development's central Ellinikon Park will boast massive green spaces, hosting more than 30,000 trees and 3 million plants suited to the climate, carefully selected by lead landscape architecture firm Sasaki for their natural compatibility with the region's soil and Mediterranean environment. The vision will be brought to life responsibly, with developers and designers utilizing eco-friendly design from the ground up by upcycling the site's history as much as possible, such as recycling salvaged concrete and airfield rubble to serve directly as structural foundations. 

The impressive ecological footprint alone should be enough to encourage locals and tourists to visit Athens, the most walkable tourist destination on earth, and The Ellinikon Park when it fully opens, tentatively set for 2031. However, the destination is also designed to bring people together along Greece's famed Athenian Riviera as it makes its glamorous comeback. Project plans show that The Ellinikon Park will showcase children's playgrounds, walking paths through shaded plazas, an outdoor amphitheater for live events, and preserved Air Force hangars, while the larger Ellinikon development will feature a brand new mall and residential areas.

Visitors don't have to wait until 2031 to experience The Ellinikon Park. A portion of the development, known as The Ellinikon Experience Park, is already open daily to the public. It offers a preview of all the things to come in this roughly 600-acre green space. The Experience Park features 75 acres of lush gardens planted with native Mediterranean botanicals, an interactive water fountain, a children's play area, and even a fitness park.

Seeing forgotten coastal space being given a chance at a second life after more than two decades highlights a growing movement toward adaptive reuse — an architectural term that simply means giving an old, unused structure a new job and purpose. The idea of combining old airport buildings with native Mediterranean landscaping has the potential to transform the site into one of the world's most impressive urban parks.
