With its sunny beaches, mix of cosmopolitan cities and laid-back suburbs, endless recreation, and famously enticing tax breaks, it's easy to see why the Sunshine State wins the hearts of retirees. While the state is rife with affordable retirement towns, it also offers plenty of places for retirees with a larger nest egg. For upper middle-class retirees desiring to spend their golden years near convenient amenities like fun shopping and scenic nature parks, vibrant Coconut Creek checks a lot of boxes.

Nestled inland between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, Coconut Creek in Broward County came in sixth in a 2025 roundup of "50 Best Retirement Towns for the Upper Middle Class" by GoBankingRates. Ten Florida towns made the cut, with Coconut Creek ranking above the others (Royal Palm Beach rounded out the top 10). According to the study, nearly 20% of Coconut Creek's residents are 65 or older, and retirees would need an estimated annual income of $121,656 to live comfortably in the canal- and lake-filled enclave. Retirees will also likely want a car in this car-dependent city, which scores just a 25 out of 100 for walkability on Walk Score. Unfortunately, public transit doesn't fare much better. Coconut Creek does, however, offer free community shuttle routes that connect with Broward County Transit.

Palm-tree-studded Coconut Creek offers residents a relaxed lifestyle with several trail-filled nature parks and plenty of entertainment just 20 minutes from sandy shores along the Atlantic. Shopping and dining destination Promenade at Coconut Creek beckons with events, fun, and retail therapy, while Seminole Casino Coconut Creek offers gambling and live entertainment. For those seeking a plush retirement among peers, Wynmoor Village is a 55-plus community comprising over 5,000 condos, a dozen tennis courts, 19 pools, and an 18-hole golf course.

Florida is brimming with scenic nature trails, so it's hardly surprising that Coconut Creek boasts several picturesque pathways perfect for ambling. The popular, 247-acre Fern Forest Nature Center has both unpaved and boardwalk trails that meander through miles of bucolic wilderness in what remains of the Cypress Creek Floodway (the boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible). The preserve is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, where wetlands and woodlands are home to more than 34 species of ferns and attract birds like scarlet tanagers, indigo buntings, and wood-warblers. The center also has an amphitheater, picnic area, and an interactive information center.

Family-friendly Tradewinds Park & Stables is where to take the grandkids to cut loose. It's a verdant, 625-acre recreational wonderland where the whole family can stroll the lovely paths in its tropical forests or hit the volleyball court, baseball field, and two sprawling disc golf courses. Treat the littlest grandkids to a ride on the model steam train, or a pony ride along one of the equestrian trails. Tradewinds' icing on the cake is Butterfly World, the world's largest butterfly aviary. The 57-acre Kristin Jacobs Natural Area at Hillsboro Pineland, named in honor of the late Florida state representative and environmental crusader, is bright with cypress trees and pine flatwoods. Coconut Creek is home to Promenade at Coconut Creek, an upscale, outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment destination. While it doesn't quite match the retail girth of America's largest outlet mall in nearby Sunrise, this breezy space, which also has a movie theater and doubles as a venue for seasonal and holiday events, features just enough apparel, accessories, and specialty shops to keep locals happy and stylish.
