Washington, D.C. has no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors, and not too far outside the city is a wonderful designated green space that's worth a visit. About a 30-minute drive from the nation's capital, Walker Mill Regional Park sprawls across 504 acres in District Heights, Maryland, and offers something for just about any type of parkgoer. There are trails, forests, picnic shelters, sports fields, and even a skate park. Walker Mill Regional Park is often described as great by visitors and is even award winning: The park received the Analysis & Planning award in 2023 from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

The park is split into two sections, with the southern portion housing most of the amenities, while the north side contains mostly natural landscape and a community garden. Beautiful nature trails wind through the grounds, and perhaps the park's most winning feature is the Woodland Wonderland Playground, an inventive play area that's architect was honored by the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association in 2015 for their contributions to the playground's design. Lauded as a "delightful blend of imaginative play areas and natural beauty" by a reviewer on Google, the site is indeed very colorful and is also fun with twisting slides, plenty of things to climb, and even a treehouse.

Explore Walker Mill Regional Park

Woodland Wonderland Playground spans 8,200 square feet and looks more like an enchanted forest than any ordinary playground. It's suitable for kids of all ages, who can spend the day zipping down slides, scrambling across climbing structures, and exploring statues of whimsical creatures. Talk tubes add an interactive element to the playground as does the musical bridge that plays notes when certain areas are pressed. While the splash pad is temporarily closed, as of this writing, you can check for updates on the park's official site.

Once you've had your fill of playground time, head toward the park's athletic facilities. Visitors can join a game or simply watch all the sporty goings-on. There are two softball fields, a baseball field, and a football/soccer field covered with synthetic turf. Feel free to shoot hoops at the basketball courts or practice your Serena Williams moves at the tennis courts. If exercising on wheels is more your thing, the park has an area with ramps and rails designed for skateboards, inline skates, and BMX bikes.

Walker Mill Regional Park isn't all about play and high-energy sports, though. The park also has more than 7 miles of walking trails. The trails bring you into natural areas, including forests and meadows, and are a great way to get out and enjoy the scenery. You can take your time exploring its longer loops or take a quicker walk on shorter paths. Also, keep your eye out for interesting birds that have been spotted in the park, such as Acadian flycatchers, tufted titmice, and indigo buntings.

Special ways to enjoy Walker Mill Regional Park

Plan your arrival to Walker Mill Regional Park from D.C. carefully, as traffic in and around the nation's capital is known for being the worst in the country. The park has a reservable, covered pavilion with barbecue grills that are great for celebrations and gatherings. In addition, the park has added a "Posh Picnics" option, which includes cushy rugs, low tables, and decorative throw pillows. To have a Posh Picnic, contact the park via email to reserve your date and time and learn more about the experience. Another special event that takes place at Walker Mill Regional Park is the seasonal farmer's market. The market is free to enter and is a great family-friendly excursion before or after a visit to the playground.

Walker Mill Regional Park is located along the Capital Beltway, making it an accessible destination from cities such as Bethesda, D.C.'s charming northern neighbor with trendy shops, and Takoma Park, one of Maryland's coolest cities with a musical legacy. It's only about a 30-minute drive if you're coming from Bethesda, and around the same amount of time if you're driving from Takoma Park. Walker Mill Regional Park is open daily from 8 a.m to 6:30 p.m. It has wheelchair accessible restrooms that are also suitable for strollers.
