Forget Florida, Retire To This Midwestern Ozark Gem With State Park Fun, Affordable Living, And Laid-Back Vibes
Although it may sometimes seem like Florida is the only worthwhile place to retire in America, this is far from the case. Missouri as a whole is a viable alternative if you enjoy scenic countryside, quiet and charming small towns, access to big cities, and more affordability. Shannon County has all of this and more, thanks to its inviting setting within the Ozarks. Natural beauty reigns here, from the rivers and forests to the dramatic bluffs and herds of wild horses roaming the countryside.
Shannon County isn't the right choice if you're looking for city living or want a lot of diversity or people around you. The county's largest city, Winona, doesn't even have 1,000 people living in it. But what the county lacks in people, it makes up for with its small-town living focused on community, outdoor recreation, and neighborly values. Although Niche gives the county an overall livability grade of C, it does grade highly in some key areas for retirees, including cost of living (A), outdoor activities (B+), housing (B-), and weather (B-). Many of these elements complement the county's convenient access to state parks and a distinct relaxed atmosphere that permeates its cities and rural areas.
Weather-wise, this is one of the most comfortable climates in the state, according to BestPlaces. While winter can become cold and snowy, the year is mostly quite mild, with some heat and humidity during summer. This comfortable weather most months is ideal for getting outdoors and embracing one of the county's best sides: its nature.
Gorgeous state parks and outdoor fun in Shannon County, Missouri
A big part of what makes this county such a darling spot is its accessibility to Echo Bluff State Park. Located 26 miles north of Winona, the park is named for and defined by the towering Echo Bluff, which concaves dramatically over the crystalline water of Sinking Creek. This tributary of the Current River flows for about a quarter-mile through Echo Bluff State Park, providing a scenic waterway for floating, swimming, and fishing for smallmouth bass. Retirees can also spend multiple nights here in relative comfort at Betty Lea Lodge or in private cabins. The lodge has bluff and creek views.
Shannon County has back-to-back state parks, with Current River State Park next door to Echo Bluff. Hiking, fishing, and historic sites make Current River a great accompaniment. You can actually hike from one state park to the other along the 10.6-mile Current River Trail. Bear in mind, this is a challenging route, gaining over 1,400 feet in elevation and taking slightly more than five hours to complete. Still, hikers on AllTrails say the views across pine forests, hollows, and the river make it a scenic trek. But you'll find easier and shorter walks within the park, too, like the 4.2-mile Ninebark Trail. It includes dense woodland with wildflowers and white oak trees, historic ruins of a former pine plantation, and a dolomite glade home to unique wildlife and plants.
America's most affordable state park, Montauk, is also on the Current River, just past the county's northernmost border. It's another outdoor gem for hiking, bike riding, picnics, and fishing for rainbow trout. And Shannon is also home to Sunklands Conservation Area, a valuable preserve for native plants and animals. It's the only known place to see purple monkshood flowers.
Affordable and laid-back living
One of the county's biggest draws for retirees is its affordable cost of living. This sort of comes with the territory of not having much infrastructure or big-city attractions and experiences nearby. Executive Pulse, which uses Census Bureau data, says the county has an affordable housing market with a stronger-than-average ratio between home values and income. The average rent is also under $600 a month — far below what renters pay in Florida (which is over $2,340, according to Zillow). The county is predominantly white but has a strong percentage of residents aged 65 years or older. This is also a rural area, and most residents use their own car or taxis to get around, which could increase living costs.
But that rural nature lends a relaxed atmosphere to its communities. Winona is Missouri's hidden gem and a rustic town with welcoming locals. The Winona Senior Center offers activities to help retirees stay social, including crafts, chair yoga, bingo, and a farmers market. Two of the county's other settlements, Eminence and Round Spring, are further up Highway 19. Both offer great access to nature, including rivers and waterfalls, as well as plenty of country vibes. Round Spring is particularly good if you want to be close to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, where wild horses roam freely.
Shannon County isn't completely isolated. You can drive to St. Louis in about three hours or Springfield in a little longer. If you can't drive, you can get around Shannon County using door-to-door SMTS service for appointments and errands. But these are limited to certain places on specific days and times. The service also provides rides to Springfield a few times a month.
