Nearly a million visitors visit Cumberland Falls State Park each year to see the "Niagara of the South" and, around the full moon, its famous moonbow. But the trade-off is packed parking lots, crowded overlooks, and busy trails. If you're looking for a quieter place in eastern Kentucky, you don't have to go too far. Just drive 100 miles northeast to Carr Creek State Park in Sassafras. Visit this laid-back gem, and you'll find anglers fishing for bass, families relaxing on one of the Kentucky State Park system's longest sandy beaches, and kayakers paddling in secluded coves, all surrounded by the quiet beauty of Kentucky's Appalachian foothills.

At only 29 acres, Carr Creek State Park might be small, but the adjoining 710-acre Carr Creek Lake gives visitors plenty of room to play. The lake was created after Carr Creek Dam was completed in the mid-1970s, but settlers began arriving in the surrounding Carr Fork area as early as the 1770s. Locals head to the beach on warm summer weekends to lounge on the sand, swim, or picnic by the shoreline. Wildlife can be spotted along the shallow water's edge and in the surrounding forests. South of the park, across Kentucky Route 15 (KY-15), a privately owned, full-service marina offers boat rentals and a ramp, making it easy for guests to get on the water. Beyond the lake, roadtrippers can stay at the campground, which offers utility hookups, showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities.

Free and open all year long, Carr Creek is a budget-friendly destination for visitors. If you're coming from Lexington, it's roughly 2 hours away. It's an easy stop on a road trip, especially if you're looking for a quieter retreat after visiting Cumberland Falls State Park, home to one of Kentucky's most majestic waterfalls. Summer is the busy season, but the park's remote location can make it feel quieter than some of Kentucky's better-known destinations.

Explore the peaceful waterways at Carr Creek Lake

Carr Creek is perfect for anyone who wants to experience Kentucky lake life. "Scenic mountain lake with great boating, fishing, and a beautiful sandy beach!" remarked a Google reviewer. As the main draw, the pretty beach, surrounded by lush hillsides, could easily be added to Kentucky's list of prime swimming destinations, with RVShare calling it "a hidden gem amongst Kentucky vacationers."

Alternatively, cruising the open waterways is a great way to experience this remote mountain oasis. Away from the sandy shoreline, visitors can bring their own boat or rent one locally and launch from the marina. From there, cruise to a quiet cove, drop the anchor, swim, and have lunch on the water. While on the lake, you may see local anglers dropping fishing lines during bass tournaments. Bring your Kentucky fishing license and rod for a chance to catch largemouth bass, crappie, and walleye in the lake or trout in the tailwater below the dam. One angler found a good fishing spot and had this to say, "We are catching big bluegill and shellcrackers on Carr Creek Lake." Just be sure to follow the regulations set by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources.

While fishing from the shore or open waters, look to the sky for a red-tailed hawk or bald eagle flying high above the hills. You might spot wood ducks swimming and great blue herons wading along the shallow edges of the lake, and hear eastern bluebirds, woodpeckers, warblers, or song sparrows in the forest. Black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, striped skunks, and raccoons might be hanging around the wooded shorelines or near the campsite. When you're ready to see the rugged side of southeastern Kentucky, carve out time to chase waterfalls inside Daniel Boone National Forest. Cumberland Falls SP is adjacent to this sprawling national forest, so you won't be going out of your way.
