Between Indianapolis And Champaign Is A Lesser-Known Nature Park With Trails, Wildlife, And Creek Views
Sugar Creek is well known to paddlers in west-central Indiana. It winds through Turkey Run State Park and Shades State Park, two of Indiana's most beloved outdoor escapes. Farther north, the scenic creek also flows through Sugar Creek Nature Park in Crawfordsville, a small 64-acre park that even some locals don't know exists. Located along U.S. Route 231, under an hour from Indianapolis, this unassuming park is where visitors come to spend peaceful days fishing, walking the trails, or simply playing fetch with their pup along the water. You can spot plenty of wildlife here, too.
Sugar Creek was carved nearly 10,000 years ago as the Wisconsin glacier receded, shaping the creek bed and surrounding landscape of west-central Indiana. Even more fascinating, the region was once covered by a shallow inland sea, so fossils from ancient aquatic creatures can still be found along sandbars and in shallow water. Even though it doesn't have the amenities or tourist appeal of the nearby state parks, it has a strong 4.5-star rating on Google. If you have a couple of hours, you can take a stroll, have a creekside picnic, play by the water, and be home in time for dinner. Kayaking is not the most popular activity here, but you might spot locals paddling on the waterway.
The park is open daily from dawn until dusk, and it has a small parking lot. If you're traveling along Interstate 74 from Champaign, Illinois, to Indianapolis, the nature park is a quick detour off the highway. For a few gallons of gas, you'll be at the edge of one of Indiana's most treasured waterways. And while you're in the area, take a self-guided tour through the charming town of Crawfordsville, the "Athens of Indiana," known for its walkable, artsy downtown and historic sites.
Things to do at Sugar Creek Nature Park
Unlike Turkey Run State Park, one of Indiana's best natural wonders, you don't need an entire day at Sugar Creek Nature Park. Instead, this quiet little nature escape has more than 4,000 feet of trails winding along the creek that don't require too much effort. The easy out-and-back path starts just off the parking lot, near the large picnic shelter. It's pretty flat and perfect for an easy 1-hour stroll through the woods, with several picnic benches for breaks.
Along the way, look out for remnants of Crawfordsville's industrial past and the bridge along U.S. Route 231. Plus, you might also spot white-tailed deer or a bald eagle flying by. Alternatively, you can simply take in the views of the flowing creek while the kids and pup enjoy the shoreline. An AllTrails user had this to say, "Nice trail right by the shore of Sugar Creek. Good for spotting wildlife, I saw a beaver swimming there one morning. Plenty of places to sit and relax." Along your stroll, head down to the water's edge to look for fossils and geodes.
If you have your fishing rod, cast your line to see if you get lucky. The creek is known for smallmouth bass and catfish, and one visitor also mentioned catching bluegill and "yellow bellies." Sugar Creek is a perfect stop for roadtrippers, families, dog owners, and casual hikers. One Google reviewer sums it up best: "Great place to explore, get some steps in, go fish, look for cool rocks, and just hang out with family." If you're heading toward Indy, consider adding some of Indianapolis' family-friendly attractions to your itinerary. Take the little ones to see the animals at the zoo, or the cool cars at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
