One of the biggest questions seniors face when nearing retirement is where they want to settle into their golden years. For some, staying put is exactly what the good doctor ordered. For others, retirement provides an opportunity to find a place that better aligns with their interests and personality. Sure — Florida's a popular choice. But why not consider somewhere a bit off the beaten path, a place like Baxter County in Arkansas? The state offers a tax-friendly, low-cost, and nature-filled environment, and Baxter stands out as one of its best counties for retirees.

Baxter County was featured by Stacker as the best county in Arkansas to retire in 2025. And in 2026, Niche ranked the county in the top two for retirement, demonstrating a consistently senior-friendly environment. Keep in mind diversity and city-based activities aren't Baxter County's strong suit. The area also centers mostly around Mountain Home, a friendly place with world-class fishing and a historic downtown. It's the most heavily populated area by far... but still doesn't surpass 14,000 people.

The rest of this southern region encompasses lakeside or riverside towns and cities, such as Lakeview, Salesville, and Cotter. Then there are the Ozark Mountains. This natural playground offers residents easy access to rolling hills, crystalline lakes, and numerous hiking trails with scenic countryside views. So while it may not be the place for city dwellers, Baxter County offers a lot for outdoor enthusiasts. It still dabbles in local culture and entertainment, from community theaters and markets to art galleries and downtown shopping. However, nature is what makes this southern retirement gem really stand out.

An active retirement in Baxter County's Ozarks

Most of the county's mountain trails are in the south. A section of the Ozark Highlands Trail starts near the county's southern border. The 4.6-mile point-to-point route has picturesque creek crossings and some small bluffs. The "first couple of miles are the most scenic," according to one hiker on AllTrails, so you don't need to make the whole trek to enjoy picturesque views. Combine this route with North Sylamore Creek Trail, a more challenging 23.4-mile trek with waterfalls, Ozark hill vistas, springtime wildflowers, and backwoods camping. Retirees can also hike the 3.8-mile Matney Knob section of the Ozark Highlands Trail. It begins just outside Norfork and offers elevated views across White River, forests, and hills. "The overlook is at the halfway point on a small side trail. We missed it on the way up," one person notes on AllTrails – so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.

You can also find fun on the water in Baxter County, which has two stunning lakes on its eastern and western sides. Lakeview is known as the state's "Paradise of the Ozarks," and it's your gateway to Bull Shoals Lake via Howard Creek. This crystal-clear lake is a scuba diver's paradise, thanks to its underwater walls, caverns, and forests providing habitats for walleye, crappie, and catfish. This also means it's great for fishing, with many quiet spots along the 1,050-mile shoreline. Norfork Lake is just as beautiful and varied. Anglers reel in striper, walleye, and trout, while all ages enjoy the lake's sandy beaches and clear water.

Baxter County's pleasant climate facilitates outdoor lifestyles. While the peak of summer and winter can be uncomfortably hot or cold, the rest of the year is typically warm and mostly sunny. Unfortunately, the area can experience tornadoes and flooding at times. Severe storms with high-speed winds have also impacted the county. It's worth weighing up these weather risks before retiring here.

Affordable living in Baxter County, AR

Baxter County's towns and cities provide decent affordability, making it more accessible for retirees than places like Florida. The county already benefits from Arkansas' tax breaks for retirees, including no tax on Social Security earnings and only partial tax on public and private pensions. But it's also around 4% more affordable to live here than the rest of the state and over 25% less expensive than the national cost of living, according to BestPlaces. This doesn't necessarily mean a lower quality of life. For example, one blogger listed Lakeview as one of Arkansas' more heavenly retirement settings thanks to its proximity to nature.

One aspect that may increase your living costs here is transport. This is one of Arkansas' least walkable counties, and most people get around using their cars. However, you can access public transport, especially if you're living in Mountain Home. North Arkansas Transport Service (NATS) provides weekday dial-a-ride transport for free within the city and $7 or more for traveling farther afield. Mountain Home is also great if you want access to senior support facilities. It has multiple complexes, including Van Matre Senior Activity & Wellness Center, which helps seniors socialize and exercise. It even runs group lunches, book drives, craft classes, meals on wheels, and holiday events.

Mountain Home offers community events throughout the year, too. The annual Baxter County Fair takes place in September and has a parade, live music on an outdoor stage, horse shows, lawnmower races, and various carnival rides and food. The fair usually has a dedicated Senior Citizens Day, when eligible attendees can enter for free. Even when a community festival isn't going on, you can still find a lively atmosphere at Rapp's Barren Brewing Company — a popular spot serving craft brews and live music with an impressive 4.6 stars on Google. Baxter County is relatively well connected to the rest of the county, as it's 1.5 hours from Branson and just over two hours from Springfield in neighboring Missouri.
