Finding the perfect place to retire is a personal decision. One size fits all is ok for hats but not for retirement. Most retirees want mild weather, affordable housing, and easy access to healthcare, but everyone has a different definition of what counts as mild, affordable, and easy access. Florida has been a popular default retirement choice for years, but dealing with the threat of hurricanes every year is less than appealing and has an impact on affordable housing. It's time to find an alternative that doesn't have that problem, like York County, South Carolina.

South Carolina weather is comfortably warm for most of the year, with summer temperatures and humidity on the high side. Snow and ice are rare in York County, and the region enjoys around 120 days of sunshine each year, so there's plenty of time to enjoy the county's many outdoor adventures. York County is conveniently located just across the state line from Charlotte, North Carolina, and its many attractions and international airport. There are advantages to living on the South Carolina side, though, most notably for its lower property taxes, without sacrificing the amenities and convenience of a large metro area.

Fort Mill is the closest city to the state line in York County, and it's the second fastest-growing city in the state. People want to live here, but don't let the crowds worry you. The county is large, just shy of 700 square miles, and is home to many charming cities with built-up shopping areas, tranquil rural countryside, and everything in between. If you prefer a slower pace and exploring small towns, York exudes southern charm, and Clover is a friendly spot with a walkable downtown. Both are under an hour away from Charlotte, in York County, and have space to breathe.

Enjoy the outdoors in York County, South Carolina

Shared with North Carolina, Lake Wylie is a popular hub for fishing and boating. It's quite large at over 12,000 acres, over half of which is within South Carolina's York County borders. Take advantage of one of the five public access boat launches or enjoy fishing from the banks at Ebenezer Park. You can even participate in water sports on the lake. Everything from kayaking and paddleboarding to jet skis and tubing is available to enjoy.

The Catawba River runs from Lake Wylie's southernmost point, between Fort Mill and Rock Hill, becoming the southeastern county line before continuing south out of the county. Floating and paddling are popular ways to enjoy the river. Just keep in mind that the water level fluctuates with controlled dam releases, so check the schedule before you go and be prepared for the water level.

For history lovers, Kings Mountain National Military Park and State Park is located in York County's northwest corner. These twin parks preserve an important Revolutionary War battlefield, a piece of South Carolina history that's often overshadowed by the more sensational decision to be the first state to secede from the Union and see the start of the Civil War at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Take a walk around the hillside, learn about the history, and be back home in a few hours. Alternatively, York County is part of the Olde English District, which delivers charming small towns, unique local shops, and outdoor adventures. Explore all the small towns in the district, support local businesses, and learn about how the English who settled this area left a lasting impression on South Carolina.
