The Cleanest City In The UK Also Has The Most Public Green Space In Scotland
A clean city can make a noticeable difference when you're visiting — everything from wandering streets free of litter to knowing there's plenty of green space when you need a break can make a trip more pleasant. Dundee was named the cleanest city in the U.K. in an analysis by Waste Direct (via Digital Journal), with an especially good green-space showing. The city has a generous spread of greenery woven into its urban landscape, so a day of museums, shops, and waterfront sightseeing can easily be broken up with a walk through a park or garden. You might take the walking paths of the volcanic-rock hill of Dundee Law, or look out over the River Tay from the Barnhill Rock Garden, all while strolling in a city with clean air, clean water, and minimal litter.
To land on Dundee being the cleanest, the 2024 Waste Direct analysis compared 40 U.K. cities across factors like air and drinking-water quality, garbage disposal, noise pollution, and green space quality, using data from Numbeo and World Population Review. Dundee's top spot was especially secured by having the highest air and water quality scores, and it earned a high score of 80 out of 100 for green space quality.
Those numbers reflect Dundee's efforts: Its Take Pride in Your City campaign has established Litter Picking Hubs with free clean-up equipment, while 41% of the city is publicly accessible green space. According to the Dundee City Council, that's the highest percentage of all Scottish cities. Eight of Dundee's parks hold Green Flag Awards, granted by Keep Scotland Beautiful to honor well-maintained and accessible parks. Aside from being an underrated walkable city and a quick trip from Edinburgh, Dundee's cleanliness and greenery add another meaningful reason to plan a visit.
Parks and gardens to visit in Dundee
Rising over the city center, the Dundee Law is exemplary when it comes to incorporating natural features into green space. It ranks at the top of Dundee's parks and nature on Tripadvisor, with travelers highlighting its panoramic views and paths. The park is defined by its hill of volcanic rock with paths and steps leading up to its summit, where a war memorial and an observation point offer sweeping views over Dundee. Benches, wildflowers, and open grassy meadows also give reasons to linger.
Over in Broughty Ferry by the River Tay, Barnhill Rock Garden received its 20th consecutive Green Flag Award in 2026, according to the Scottish Daily Express. The garden was created in the 1950s on an old stretch of volcanic shoreline, and features pathways alongside ponds and unusual rock formations. Its position beside the River Tay makes it a good spot for getting views across the water — and maybe spotting some seals.
For something a little further outside the center (and one immaculate Scottish destination to pull you from the tourist trail), head toward Trottick Mill Ponds Local Nature Reserve, yet another Green Flag Award-holder. The reserve's greenery has a tie to Dundee's industrial past: The ponds here were built to supply water to a bleach works. Old industrial remnants still sit among the ponds, woods, and meadow, while the reserve is home to tons of wildlife, including swans, herons, newts, and bats. Follow walking paths around the ponds, or zoom along the Dundee Green Circular Cycle Path that runs through the reserve. After checking out some of Dundee's city parks, you could venture a bit further out (about 45 minutes by car) to the Lomond Hills, with dramatic trails and landmarks.
