For some seniors, Florida is the first thing they think of when it comes to settling down in retirement. From white sand beaches to warm year-round weather, many see moving to the Sunshine State as living the dream. But others imagine spending their golden years wandering wooded trails or sipping on a glass of wine overlooking the mountains. Just one state over, in Pickens County, Georgia, retirees can do just that.

The county ranked fifth on Niche's 2026 list of best counties for retirees in Georgia. The appeal becomes even clearer when you explore the communities themselves. An afternoon out in Pickens County could look like lunch and specialty cocktails with mountain views at The Old Mulehouse, following the Marble Story Trail for a closer look at the county's history, or simply strolling through Jasper's downtown for some retail therapy.

While Jasper, the county seat, has a relatively walkable downtown area, living in Pickens County does require some pre-planning if you're looking to explore. For example, Jasper, Talking Rock, and Tate are all between 50 and 70 miles north of Atlanta. Wineries and mountain trailheads are also spread across the area, so retirees should expect to drive or request the Mountain Area Transportation System 24 hours in advance to reach them.

Local wineries offer tastings and mountain views

If you enjoy wine, you won't have to look far to experience the Blue Ridge Mountains' scenic wineries, with several options right in Pickens County. At Cairn View Winery in Jasper, guests will enjoy tastings personalized by a wine steward. You'll receive four 2-ounce pours with each set tasting, but the winery also offers dozens of red, white, and sweet wines by the glass or bottle. According to its official website, reservations are not required, but they are "highly encouraged" if you'd like table seating. Additionally, for those interested in returning regularly, the winery hosts live music and other events — though some require pre-registration.

A 25-minute drive away, Sharp Mountain Vineyards is another option for wine lovers looking for ways to spend an afternoon in Pickens County. This family-owned vineyard located at the foot of Sharp Mountain grows grapes on-site and produces several wines, including sweet and dry selections. Past visitors praised the vineyard's wine tastings, with one Google Maps reviewer writing, "A perfect spot to relax and enjoy delicious wines with breathtaking views of Sharp Mountain. The gourmet meats and cheeses pair beautifully with their award-winning selections."

Those interested in exploring further out for some libations can head toward Ellijay, a scenic mountain city known for its wine and waterfalls. At Fainting Goat Vineyards and Winery, a glass of wine comes with stunning views of the mountains. If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, live music adds to the ambiance. However, the winery does have one quirk: It actually is home to goats, as its name suggests.

Parks and trails keep outdoor recreation nearby in Pickens County

Retirees looking to stay active outdoors in Pickens County don't necessarily need to tackle a steep mountain hike every morning. Doris Wigington Park in Talking Rock has about 3 miles of walking trails that take parkgoers through the woods. Though the trails aren't paved and, according to one Google Maps reviewer, can sometimes have "heavy leaf cover," they have a rating of easy.

For something more demanding, Burnt Mountain Preserve covers 900 acres and has three trails of varying lengths. Crest Trail, which stretches 0.3 miles and can be reached from the parking lot, is the easiest. However, those hoping to hike the 1-mile Preserve Trail and the 2-mile Champion Creek Trail should be aware that portions of the terrain along these routes have steep drops. Residents looking for a longer excursion to see fall foliage can also explore nearby Amicalola Falls State Park, home to Georgia's tallest waterfall.

Not only do retirees in Pickens County need to choose trails wisely, but they should also stay on top of the weather when visiting them. For example, in July, Jasper averages highs in the mid-80s (degrees Fahrenheit) and January lows around freezing. As a result, it can be helpful to have alternative activities in mind for when it gets colder outside. The Pickens County Community Center, for example, has pickleball, an indoor walking track, and hosts fitness and yoga classes.
