Depending on who you ask, only three or four other states in America can claim more lakes than Michigan. Even then, the Mitten State tops the list for the most miles of freshwater shoreline. So you can imagine the competition among lakes in what is aptly nicknamed the Great Lakes State. Torch Lake and Houghton Lake get a lot of attention for their boating and fishing, but there's a lesser-known gem with crystalline water that's also worth checking out. Located a 2.5-hour drive north of Grand Rapids, Lime Lake sprawls across 670 acres in Leelanau County. While locals may not be keen on Lime Lake getting too famous, eco-conscious visitors can certainly enjoy this pristine environment while preserving its beauty.

The lake, which welcomes boating and year-round fishing, has about 13 feet of water clarity, according to LakeQuality. The online lake guide also shows it has low phosphorus and trophic state index levels, indicating cleanliness and clarity. This can be partly attributed to the several waterways, including springs and creeks, that feed it. Lime Lake also has a diverse mix of materials across its bed, including sand, marl, and gravel, with little vegetation. All of this, plus the ongoing conservation work by Lime Lake Association and Leelanau Conservancy, helps maintain the lake's presence as a beautiful place for outdoor recreation.

Part of this recreation can be on land, thanks to Pat's Preserve. This 60-acre area offers protected ecosystems along 1,000 feet of the lake's southwest shoreline. Landlubbers can explore the wetlands and forests while keeping an eye out for bears, bobcats, deer, otters, coyotes, and beavers. But really, this place is designed for aquaphiles, because the water is where Lime Lake truly wins you over.

Responsible fishing and boating on Lime Lake

Lime Lake is a good spot for trout fishing, offering year-round access with any type of tackle you prefer. However, the lake has a strict possession limit of five trout per day to help preserve its fish populations. That limit drops down to three if you're lucky enough to reel in some big ones (15 inches or longer). If you want to fish from your boat, you can launch it using a boat ramp on the western shoreline just off Maple City Road. It's only one minute down the road from Fisher's Lakeside Cottages if you fancy staying overnight. The cottages also have private docks and access to a long pier to make your fishing and boating much easier.

Responsible boating is expected from visitors at Lime Lake. Motorized and non-motorized boats and water sports equipment need to be thoroughly cleaned to stop invasive species from entering the lake and destroying established ecosystems. Additionally, boaters should be mindful of these habitats — and other people in the water — when cruising around, including avoiding power turns. While these regulations may feel a little restrictive to some, they help maintain the quality of the lake and ensure it's a paradise for all types of boaters. Kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders are especially spoiled with crystalline water as they paddle past creeks, sandy shorelines, and forests.

Michigan's abandoned ski resort, Sugar Loaf Ski Area, has also started to reopen to the public as a nature area with trails, sledding, and play areas. It's under 10 minutes' drive from Lime Lake. You're also within 30 minutes' drive from Traverse City. This lake city has an Italy-esque wine scene, but it's not the only vacation gem nearby. You can also stay 15 minutes away in Leland, a picturesque fishing village.
