Many retirees have Florida at the top of their list when considering where they want to move in their golden years, but high costs and other challenges are making the Sunshine State a little less attractive to some retirees. For those seeking a quiet retirement with fun amenities on the East Coast, but with more affordable living costs, Harrington, Delaware, might be the place.

Located in Central Delaware, a 30-minute drive from the state capital of Dover, Harrington enjoys quiet, rural living while being close enough to all the services needed to retire comfortably. Harrington has well-reviewed local primary care options while being within driving distance of nationally regarded hospitals for more advanced care. In fact, the state ranked No. 2 in the country for hospital quality in a 2026 U.S. News & World Report list. There's also plenty of fun to be had in and around Harrington. You're never too far from antique shops, restaurants, the local casino, and events happening throughout the year.

With Delaware being the "First State," history lovers will also have a field day here. If you want to learn more about Harrington's history, you can visit the Greater Harrington Historical Society's museum, located in the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church built in 1876.
