Under An Hour From Provincetown Is Cape Cod's Coastal Trail With Scenic Wetland Views And Wildlife

There's a beautiful trail that forms a quiet loop through scenic expanses of bird-rich marshes and historic sights.

The Fort Hill Trail in the town of Eastham offers stunning panoramas of coastal wetlands silhouetted against the vast Atlantic Ocean. Just a mile-long walk with no elevation gain, it's perfect for families with young kids, beginner hikers, or anyone looking to soak up idyllic shoreline views without a challenging trek. The trail's parking lot sits right off Route 6, and requires no reservation or fee. A nearby overflow parking lot is also available. Because of a delicate ecosystem, your Fido won't be allowed to join in this adventure. The hike is open year-round from 6 a.m. to midnight, with each season — from the greenery of summer to the snow-covered landscapes of winter — offering something unique to trekkers.

This coastal trail wastes almost no time delivering rewarding adventures, with hikers immediately encountering the historic 'Captain Penniman House' a few steps into the route. The 19th-century mansion isn't just for the photo op, but also a gorgeous example of French Empire-style architecture. While you can explore its lush grounds anytime, the interiors are only accessible via free, guided tours (offered by NPS) for a limited time each year. Continuing counter-clockwise from here, you will pass a stretch of expansive fields before reaching the 'Trail Hill Overlook' — another spot where you can slow your rhythm as the panoramic views of Nuset Marsh and barrier beaches unfold before you.

The path then winds along vast saltwater marshes, weaves through woods, and even passes freshwater ponds, offering a scenery that feels anything but moderate. You'll also see a sharpening rock, a prehistoric boulder used by Native Americans here to sharpen their tools, which is a point of interest. Near the end, you can combine the hike with the 0.8-mile 'Red Maple Swamp' trail to form a longer loop. It's a boardwalk-lined route mantled by towering maple trees and surrounded by more swampy wilderness.

The setting is especially lovely at sunrise, when the sky changes colors. Early morning is also a good time for bird-watching as this mix of habitats — forests, ponds, wetlands, and fields — provides a safe home to over 200 species of winged critters. Sandpipers, plovers, gulls, sparrows, egrets, and marsh wrens are all seen here, with spring and fall bringing the most migratory birds to spot. Besides birds, wildlife like crabs, seals, raccoons, deer, squirrels, and foxes also frequent this region.

There's also the option to cruise these tidal wetlands on your kayak or canoe. The Hemenway Landing, another entry point to this trail, offers a launch point for taking out your boats and paddling into the bay. There's a good chance of spotting cute seals on this excursion. 

If you'd like to wind down instead, travel a few minutes away to Coast Guard Beach — considered one of the best beaches in America – and relax on its soft sands. Meanwhile, you can recharge with a meal at the nearby restaurant, The Knack, where the buttered lobster rolls and crispy fish tacos will calm the hunger pangs after a day of exploration.
