Alabama's Scenic Nature Preserve Near Huntsville Is A Secluded Gem With Trails And A Cascading Waterfall

On a peaceful, undeveloped patch of property once owned by a farming family, a beautiful nature preserve welcomes visitors to explore newly developed trails and discover the secrets of northern Alabama. Just 30 minutes outside of Huntsville, this natural area is a rustic day trip destination for visitors eager to experience Alabama's countryside. At Bethel Spring Nature Preserve, outdoor explorers will find quiet forest hikes and a cascading waterfall plunging into a cave.

The two sisters who once lived at Bethel Spring knew that their land possessed a special beauty worth preserving. Unwilling to see the property's features lost to development, they donated the homesite that had been in their family for over 100 years to the Land Trust of Northern Alabama. While the original home on the land no longer exists, the nature preserve is still dotted with historic remnants of the farm that once existed there. Two benches commemorate the spot where the sisters' home once stood, a tribute to their thoughtful gift that ensured that the scenic wonder of their property would be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.

The trails at Bethel Spring Nature Preserve

There are about 2 miles of trails at Bethel Spring Nature Preserve, so most visitors can hike the entire route in under two hours. Bethel Creek Loop Trail is a short, crushed-gravel path just off the parking lot, and it forms an easy route for anyone seeking a quick respite in nature. The 0.3-mile trail is suitable for hikers of all levels, including visitors with mobility devices. It travels over bridges and past Bethel Creek to a view of grassy fields and Keel Mountain in the distance.

Visitors who are up for a more difficult hike can trek the 1.3-mile route that will take hikers up Keel Mountain to see the waterfall before winding back down to the parking area. Park staff recommend hiking Carpenter Trail and Falling Sink Trail up to the falls before taking the steeper Mill Trail back down the mountain, although some hikers note that they prefer to take the more arduous Mill Trail route on the front end of their trek. The route to the falls is steep, gaining about 400 feet in elevation. Visitors should come prepared with walking sticks and sturdy shoes to help traverse the slippery rock path along the way.

Hike to one of the area's biggest waterfalls

The waterfall that's the centerpiece of Bethel Spring Nature Preserve is one of the largest in the Huntsville area, cascading over layers of rock before disappearing into a cave. Adventurers who make the hike to the falls often choose to stay a while, lounging on the nearby rocks or even hanging up hammocks to relax in while enjoying the sounds of the rushing water. While there is no pool or swimming hole at the base of the falls since it pours into an underground cavern, the water reemerges as a spring that feeds the stream along Bethel Creek Trail, where visitors can cool off with a dip in the shallow water. Note that the caves on the property are off-limits to general visitors, but would-be spelunkers can travel just 15 minutes down the road to visit the stunning, accessible caves at Cathedral Caverns State Park.

Although it's only about 20 miles from Huntsville's futuristic space center and thriving arts scene, Bethel Spring Nature Preserve is in an isolated, rural area. Visitors should arrive prepared with drinking water and snacks, as there are no water or bathroom facilities on the land. Visitors to the falls note that the increased water after rainfall makes for a more spectacular waterfall-viewing experience. However, the trail becomes more difficult during rainy periods due to the slippery rocks. For this reason, the park prohibits cycling on the trails 24 hours after rainfall. Parking is available at the nature preserve, but the lot can quickly fill on busy days. If you are visiting on a weekend, keep an alternate nearby destination in mind, like the waterfalls and planetarium at Monte Sano State Park.
