Forget Florida, Retire To This East Coast Gem Between Boston And Portland With Antique Shops And Ocean Views

If your dream is to retire near the ocean, that doesn't need to mean moving south to Florida. The charming beachfront towns of New England's Atlantic Coast also fit the bill, and there are several to choose from in New Hampshire's Rockingham County. In fact, on Niche's 2026 list of the Best Places to Retire in New Hampshire, seven of the top 10 towns are in Rockingham County. Four of those are directly along the coast, with the rest just a short drive away.

Occupying the state's southeast corner, Rockingham County is the second-largest in New Hampshire by population, home to about 326,000 people. But don't take that to mean it's a dense, urban area. That population is split between the county's 36 towns and cities, the largest of which, Derry, is home to about 34,000 people. Residents looking for big-city bustle can head just a few miles west of the county line to Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city, or drive about 90 minutes south to Boston. Head north, and you'll be in Portland, Maine, in a little over an hour, so there are several New England day trips in easy reach.

New Hampshire in general is a premier East Coast state for retirees. It earned the top spot in Bankrate's 2025 Best States to Retire study, ranking first for safety and netting high ratings in areas like healthcare access, affordability, and entertainment. The state is known for retiree-friendly tax laws, with no taxes on Social Security or retirement account withdrawals. There's also a sizeable senior population here, with almost a quarter of the population aged 65 or over. That age breakdown holds true within Rockingham County, and its towns offer retirees a lot of options for socializing and finding a community.

According to Niche, Stratham is the best place to retire in New Hampshire, giving it high marks for safety, health, and housing. Stratham's population of about 7,700 gives it a laid-back small-town atmosphere, and it offers an active program of activities tailor-made for seniors, including weekly activities like tai chi, bridge classes, art workshops, and coffee socials. The Sunrise Sunset Center in nearby Newmarket has a similarly robust schedule of senior activities to explore.

For those who want to live right on the ocean, the New Hampshire beach town of Rye is listed as Niche's No. 2 choice for retirees. It is similar in size to Stratham and offers residents a peaceful, coastal atmosphere. Here, you can relax by the water at Jenness State Beach or Wallis Sands State Park (which residents over 65 can access for free) or take a scenic drive down Route 1A. For a more energetic outing, Hampton Beach offers a lively boardwalk, plus live entertainment at the historic Casino Ballroom and an active summer schedule of nightly concerts, weekly fireworks, and events like the long-running Hampton Beach Seafood Festival.

Rockingham County also offers top-notch antique shopping, home to many stops along the New Hampshire Antique Trail. Many of these are in the Hampton area, like Full Moon's Vintage Village, a repurposed two-story barn where you can browse wares from over 30 vendors. The collection at Route 1 Antiques in Hampton Falls is even more extensive, with goods from 85 dealers gathered in a 19th-century house and barn.
