Forget Florida, Retire To This Jersey Shore Escape With Charming Towns, Vibrant Parks, And Scenic Beaches

Florida has many strengths, like beautiful beaches, great weather year-round, and warm water. No place is perfect, though, and the Sunshine State is no exception. Migration to the state is slowing down, with the University of Florida reporting that only half as many people moved to Florida in 2025 compared to its peak in 2022. While you might be ready to pass on the dream of retiring to Florida, that certainly doesn't mean you'll be downgrading with another state. New Jersey is one such place where some retirees are taking a closer look — in particular, Monmouth County. 

Within this county, you get the Jersey Shore's idyllic beaches, easy access to big cities like New York City and Philadelphia, charming towns, and gorgeous parks to spend the day exploring. Transparently, the cost of living is not cheap in New Jersey. In fact, it's about 29.1% higher than the U.S. average, according to Best Places. However, seniors have access to several programs that can ease or eliminate the burdens of state retirement income taxes and property taxes.

As you age, healthcare quality and access become quite important, and this is where the Garden State excels. If maintaining your health is a priority, New Jersey's healthcare system is the sixth-best in the country, ranked at No. 1 in overall public health by U.S. News. If you're interested in moving into a retirement living facility or are considering continuing care as you age, there are many highly rated communities throughout the state. Besides the cost of living, the primary drawback for most will be the weather. While summers are generally regarded as some of the best on the East Coast, the winters can get cold, with infamous nor'easter storms. Despite this, the state has plenty to offer, which might just quell any lingering doubts.

Monmouth County is located in east-central New Jersey along the Jersey Shore, with Sandy Hook Bay to the north and Ocean County to the south. While Monmouth is home to many great towns like the timeless and scenic Allentown, you may still want access to big cities for entertainment, great food, and attractions. From Sandy Hook Bay, you can easily reach Manhattan in under an hour or take the North Jersey Coast Line train to NYC. From certain cities, you can reach Philadelphia in around an hour, too.

Many towns in Monmouth County have plenty to do to keep you active and involved in your community in retirement. One such town is Red Bank, home to just under 13,000 people and a popular travel and retirement destination. This is thanks to its walkable downtown, flush with boutique shops, salons and spas, art galleries, and top-rated restaurants and bars. The Two River Theater also hosts live performances of original plays, poetry nights, and a community book club. Red Bank's location directly on the Navesink River also adds to its charm, with riverfront attractions like the Riverside Gardens Park and the grand Molly Pitcher Inn. Despite its small size, you'll find many highly-rated retirement communities and medical facilities within Red Bank.  

Heading inland to the center of the county is the Freehold Township, the county seat of Monmouth. With beautiful historic colonial and Victorian-era homes and buildings and a bustling downtown, retirees will find it easy to build a life and community here. The town also often hosts farmers' markets, seasonal concert series, and other fun holiday events downtown. With major highways intersecting the area, it's easy to travel around New Jersey from Freehold, and the nearby CentraState Healthcare System is well regarded.

If you're looking for oceanfront instead of riverfront, you might consider the historic beach town of Spring Lake on the Jersey Shore. At Spring Lake Beach, you'll find a long boardwalk that's great for getting your steps in, pavilions with concession stands, and a wide sandy beach. With so much room to spread out here, a day on the beach can be as peaceful or active as you desire. Set up your beach chair away from the crowds and catch up with your favorite book or hang closer to the action with the grandkids, enjoying the idle conversations of passersby. Besides its idyllic beach, the town of Spring Lake also has art walks, garden tours, charity paddles and races, sidewalk sales, and heritage festivals. For even more beaches, consider Avon-by-the-Sea, which boasts one of Jersey's best boardwalks and historic lampposts that will have you strolling back in time. The beaches along Sandy Hook Bay are also popular, with soft sandy shores, grassy dunes, and spectacular views of Manhattan across the bay. 

Beyond the scenic beaches, there are also vibrant state parks such as the Allaire State Park. This park preserves a historic 19th-century village, with whitewashed and red-brick buildings that offer a taste of life in that era. The 800-acre park has 20 miles of trails that traverse sandy boardwalks, woodlands of red maple and oaks, bogs filled with wetland birds, and meadows packed with wildflowers. There's also Cheesequake State Park, which is a little over 1,600 acres and preserves a unique convergence of different ecosystems and ecological zones. It contains urban and suburban areas, fresh and saltwater marshes, swamps, and some of New Jersey's famous pine barren habitats. The park is stunning in all seasons, and during fall, the leaves change color, flashing shades of yellow, orange, and red.
