Not Lake Placid, Not Traverse City — This Charming Coastal Town Was Named The Coziest Fall Destination In The US
Fall in America is a time to snuggle up and get cozy — when crisp blue days become cool nights and foliage changes into vibrant autumnal colors. This is quite a distinct season, as not every place in the country provides the right fall environment (ahem, Florida, ahem). If you're looking for somewhere to get snug this fall, cast your gaze to Bar Harbor, a coastal escape on Mount Desert Island in Maine. The town, which may strike you more as a summer getaway, was recently revealed as America's coziest fall destination in 2026 in a BetMGM Casino study.
BetMGM Casino compiled this list by analyzing the 20 most-recommended fall vacation destinations in the U.S. The betting provider assessed each destination's fall aesthetic and amenities, looking at factors like the foliage colors, rainfall, and sweater-appropriate climate, in addition to the cafés, boutiques, farmers' markets, and other activities or environments you'd expect to enjoy during a fall getaway. Using data from the National Centers for Environmental Information, the 2026 Explore Fall Foliage Map, Yelp, Tripadvisor, and other official sources, BetMGM Casino found that Bar Harbor provides the coziest fall experience overall.
Bar Harbor is already one of America's most affordable vacation destinations, but it has now also proven itself to be one of its best for fall. In topping BetMGM Casino's list, Bar Harbor outperformed some of America's most iconic fall destinations, such as Lake Placid in New York and Traverse City in Michigan. Bar Harbor achieved an overall coziness score of 66.9 out of 100, which is just over three points higher than Lake Placid and almost 10 points higher than Traverse City, ranked No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. BetMGM Casino highlighted Bar Harbor's near-perfect sweater temperature, consistently vibrant fall foliage, and range of cafés, bookshops, parks, and other activities as the main reasons for its coziness.
Charming fall activities in Bar Harbor, Maine
Some of Bar Harbor's best fall colors await in Acadia National Park, which has postcard-worthy scenery year-round. You enter the 47,000-acre national park about 10 minutes after leaving downtown in your car. From there, you'll drive through an autumnal wonderland along the 27-mile Park Loop Road. Dozens of tree species live in the national park, and their orange, red, and yellow leaves contrast spectacularly against the granite mountains, sparkling blue water, and evergreens. Numerous hiking trails also provide enthralling treks to see the national park's fall colors from above and below. Hiking up Cadillac Mountain is one of the best options. Its 1,530-foot summit gives you a bird's-eye view over not only the foliage within the park, but all across the island to its coastline.
Bar Harbor's Main Street is also a delight to wander this time of year, offering shopping, dining, and entertainment. For those who don't consider it fall until they have a good book to read, Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop coaxes you inside, showcasing rows of timber shelves filled with stories, including many that are set in Maine. Around the corner along Firefly Lane is Hidden Barn Books. Arguably even cozier than the first, this one invites you to browse, read, play puzzles and board games, and mingle in its loft. The actual barn setting also works a treat during fall.
Cozy up with coffee and freshly baked treats beside Frenchman Bay at Sunrise Cafe. It has a famous blueberry pie, plus muffins, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and brownies to warm any fall chills. You can also order sweet and savory crepes (including one with lobster) to enjoy indoors or while walking along the adjoining pier. Afterward, stroll through the neighboring Agamont Park to view beautiful orange and red trees beside the harbor and bay.
Visiting Bar Harbor during fall
You may want to time your Bar Harbor visit during one of its fall events. The Eden Farmer's Market is held on Sundays from 9 a.m. until noon between May and October in the local YMCA's parking lot. Marketgoers can find local produce here, including fresh vegetables, seafood, meat, and baked goods. Visit in November for the Early Bird Pajama Sale and Bed Races. For one day, local shops give discounts to customers in their pajamas early in the morning, and costumed teams race homemade beds down Cottage Street, drawing crowds of spectators.
You can drive to Bar Harbor in about three hours from Portland or just over 4.5 hours from Boston. If you want to stay near downtown, consider staying at Little Fig Hotel. It has cozy and thoughtfully decorated rooms and suites, with complimentary breakfast inside a large white-and-green cottage. The town also has many other hotels and inns for a variety of budgets.
Bear in mind that Bar Harbor can become inundated with visitors. The town recently partially overturned its ban on large cruise ships, which was set in place to cap the number of cruise passengers during summer and shoulder seasons. Acadia National Park also sees a large influx of visitors during September and October. It's important to note that Bar Harbor was also the rainiest fall destination on BetMGM Casino's list, so those seeking a warm fall sun or peace and quiet might want to head elsewhere. If you want a dry fall getaway, you could instead try Bend, a naturally breathtaking Oregon city that was also the study's driest fall destination.
