Inside Spain's Picos De Europa National Park Is A Village With Mountain Trails, Historic Charm, And Nearby Stays
Spain has long been one of Europe's most popular travel destinations, but its status as a tourism haven tends to center around prominent cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville. The Spanish countryside, however, is ripe with historic communities and magnificent natural scenery rivaling anywhere else in Europe. One small but impressive village that blends Spain's history and natural splendor is Posada de Valdeón. Just within its modest borders hides a surprising collection of historic buildings — some dating back a thousand years or more — and traditional architecture. Pull back a bit further, though, and the village's biggest asset comes into focus.
Similar to American towns like Grand Canyon Village, Posada de Valdeón is located within a breathtaking national park. The surrounding backdrop of Picos de Europa National Park — one of Europe's prettiest parks, is representative of the underrated beauty of northern Spain's Picos de Europa mountains. The village is close enough to many of the national park's most prominent peaks for some truly unforgettable views to complement its historic buildings. From here, adventurers have convenient access to many of the national park's best trails, including a particularly formidable route through the stunning mountain canyon. Even if hiking isn't for you, Posada de Valdeón is an unmissable destination for history buffs looking to explore centuries of Spanish history in a charming, scenic setting, all while getting to stay in one of the village's cozy overnight lodging options.
A historic Spanish village inside a breathtaking national park
Spain's mountainous Castile and León region is filled with hidden old-world gems like the underrated Ribera del Duero wine region, but the village of Posada de Valdeón represents Castile and León's stellar scenery like few other communities in the region. It's quite tiny, with a population of less than 400 people, but enjoys a backdrop that's as vast as any setting could be. The village is located in Spain's Valdeón Valley, within the Picos de Europa range of Spain's underrated Cantabrian Mountains. The gigantic limestone massifs of the range, and the banks of the River Cares with its impressive gorge, are major features of Spain's Picos de Europa National Park.
Though small even by village standards, Posada de Valdeón serves as the tourism capital for the national park and the Valdeón Valley. As a national park village, it provides excellent views and access to the snowy mountain peaks, the surrounding lowland forests, and the gorge. Within its borders, visitors get dramatic shots of the ultra-prominent, 8,687-foot Torre Cerredo, the highest peak in Picos de Europa, rising up from the Urrieles Massif.
Posada de Valdeón also preserves a distinct culture and history within this outstanding natural setting. The village dates back to at least the 10th Century, and still has several historic landmarks that will delight Medievalists and history buffs. The Church of Santa Eulalia was established in 1098, and today maintains historic features like a 12th-Century baptismal font and a 16th-Century fresco. The village also has several historic "hórreos," traditional agricultural structures used to store crops.
Exploring Posada de Valdeón
Hikers can access many of Pico de Europa's best viewpoints from Posada de Valdeón's trail network. Most notable is the challenging (but magnificent) Cares Route traversing Pico de Europa's Cares Gorge (AKA "the Grand Canyon of Spain"). The full Cares Route covers over 13 miles across the Cares River Gorge and the snowy mountain peaks above. Posada de Valdeón is a bookend for one of the trail's two main components, which connects it to the nearby village of Caín a few miles away. After exploring the lovely Valdeón Valley between the two villages, hikers can continue on to the more challenging section that traverses the Cares River Gorge. Hikers can also access the Mirador del Trombo viewpoint, with dazzling views of the national park's massifs and limestone cliffs.
A shorter and more culturally immersive hike lies along a 6.4-mile out and back trail between Posada de Valdeón and the "Refugio de Vegabaño" (the Vegabaño mountain hut). The hut serves as a great rustic overnight stay high in the mountain ecosystem, with opportunities to enjoy traditional homemade meals. Another 6.7-mile loop trail connects Posada de Valdeón to the village of Santa Marina de Valdeón, with superb views of mountains, rivers, and forests along the way.
Posada de Valdeón, though small, does have numerous options for overnight lodging within Picos de Europa National Park. Visitors can find many well-reviewed hotels nearby, including the one-of-a-kind Hotel Rural Picos de Europa on the outskirts of the village. With both cabins and bed-and-breakfast-inspired rooms boasting views of nature — plus a seasonal outdoor pool situated against the mountain backdrop — the highly-rated Hotel Rural Picos de Europa is ideal for enjoying the national park's scenery in rustic style and modern comfort. Posada de Valdeón also features a variety of vacation rentals and even more rustic huts and cabins.
