- Hillary grew up on a tugboat in the Columbia river and has called many unconventional places home, including a sailboat, a van, and now a vintage trailer.
- Her travel writing is heavily inspired by her own experiences; she often spends winters hiking the beautiful canyons of Arizona and summers learning to wing foil in the chill of Hood River, Oregon.
- Hillary's favorite travel memories are walking barefoot among 3000 year-old redwoods in California, watching the sun rise while sailing from San Diego to the Sea of Cortez, and encountering five bears (from a safe distance) on Mount Rainier's Wonderland Trail.
