If you've been to Spain, you may have sampled some wonderful wine varietals like tempranillo, rioja, or garnacha, which can be less common in the wine aisle than the likes of merlot or moscato. Perhaps you've been to Spain's best-kept secret wine region of Priorat or had some heavenly food and wine pairings in the Basque Country. However, you may not have had these delicious Spanish wines simply by the glass. You might have tried them in sangria, a drink that travel pro Rick Steves calls a "bloody good Spanish punch" on his website.

There's a good reason for what he says. Steves explains, "Bright red in color, it takes its name from the Spanish word sangre, which means 'blood.' The key ingredients are red wine and fruit. It's often spiked with something stronger to give it a kick." It's simply delicious, but that can be a bit of a trap for the unwary. Steves warns that "sangria's fruitiness can make it taste deceptively harmless until your head starts to spin. Pace yourself carefully until you've determined how much of a punch it packs."

If you're unfamiliar with sangria, it's usually made with a red wine varietal like rioja (though it doesn't have to be a Spanish red). You put in sliced fruits and berries, though Steves points out that you should make sure what you have in there is seedless. He also recommends citrus because, as he explains, "acidity tempers the sweetness." Sugar and soda water may also be added, as well as spices like cinnamon. Then, you can add other, harder alcohols like gin or vodka to make it even stronger or adjust the taste. Finally, you let it sit for a while so the fruit soaks up the alcohol.

All about sangria, different varieties, and why you should be careful drinking it

Adding fruit to wine has been around since the days of the Roman Empire when water wasn't particularly safe to drink. Sangria itself may have originated around the 14th century in the Caribbean or Ecuador, or it may have come from Spain. The origins are debated, but the European Union declared in 2014 that it can only be labeled as sangria if it's from Spain or Portugal. (It was introduced to the United States at the World's Fair in 1964.)

One thing to know if you're traveling around Spain is that sangria is considered a summer drink. If you see places offering it in the winter, they're likely trying to attract tourists, which may or may not concern you. You probably should sample it anyway, Rick Steves notes, as restaurants and bars often have unique recipes. If red wine isn't your thing, you can make it with white. You can also use sparkling wine or even non-alcoholic wine. 

Sangria is refreshing and very sweet, depending on what you put in it. That's the danger — it may not taste particularly alcoholic, and if it's a hot day, it's easy to consume more than you mean to. Plus, you may not know if it's just wine in the sangria or if other alcohol(s) have been added. That said, contrary to some drinking lore, sweet drinks don't cause more hangovers. You might feel the effects of the sugar if your body is sensitive to it, but it's more likely that it just doesn't taste as strong. When Steves, who has given us some of the best travel tips out there, tells us to pace ourselves with sangria, it's a good idea to listen.

Baltimore is one of the more historically significant cities in the U.S. The historic charm of Baltimore is felt throughout the city and even extends into many of the outlying areas. Like the city itself, many of the surrounding attractions are situated along Chesapeake Bay, one of the most storied water bodies in the country. One such spot is North Point State Park. This bayside state park just outside of Baltimore offers a unique combination of historical charm, natural beauty, and outdoor activities.

Nestled along Chesapeake Bay, North America's largest estuary, North Point State Park is only 30 minutes from downtown Baltimore by car. The 1,310-acre park has a colorful history and the land has played a significant role in multiple eras. A trail used by soldiers during the War of 1812, the same war during which the "Star-Spangled Banner" was written, is still an integral part of the park today. During the first half of the 1900s, a portion of the land was part of a popular tourist attraction, the Bay Shore Amusement Park. A trolley station from that time period has been repurposed to serve as a picnic area in the state park. 

Other preserved features inside the park, including an original fountain and trolley power station, add to its historic charm and character. However, aside from these remnants of its past, the land has largely been restored to its natural condition since becoming a state park in 1987.

Explore the wetlands at North Point State Park

Visitors to North Point State Park can take advantage of its position at the end of a small peninsula in Chesapeake Bay for fishing. There are two fishing piers in the park. The 1,000-foot Crystal Pier has a paved walkway along its entire length. Anglers can also fish from shore or wade into the shallow waters along the shoreline. Striped bass, white perch, spot, channel catfish, black crappie, and bluefish are among the most common catches.

While a good portion of North Point State Park faces Chesapeake Bay, more than half of it is comprised of the Black Marsh Natural Area. The 667-acre Black Marsh wildlands are home to a myriad of bird species, as well as small mammals such as beavers, foxes, muskrats, and otters. Miles of hiking trails run through these wetlands, including the Black Marsh and Beaver Pond Trails. The Observation Trail leads to a scenic overlook, where visitors are treated to panoramic views of the wetlands.

Although camping is not allowed, North Point State Park is close enough to Baltimore and its suburbs, where there are plenty of accommodation options. For those who prefer camping to hotels, Hart-Miller Island State Park, a beautiful park with sandy beaches, camping, and bay views, is not far away. However, it is on an island that is only accessible by boat. Camping is also possible at Patapsco Valley State Park, a gorgeous park filled with forests, waterfalls, and historic bridges, which is some 25 miles inland.

With its clear turquoise waters, pine-fringed scenery, and seemingly endless stretches of shoreline, Lake Tahoe is appealing to many a swimmer. But it's not the only body of water in California worth splashing around in. Situated roughly 200 miles away in San Francisco's East Bay region is Lake Anza, a gem of nature beloved by locals. Per California.com, it ranks among the most stunning destinations to swim in the northern part of the state. The popular reservoir presently boasts a solid 4.6 Google rating from more than 100 reviews, which isn't far behind Lake Tahoe's 4.8 stars.

Covering all of roughly 10 acres, Lake Anza isn't quite as big as its better-known counterpart. Nonetheless, the spring-fed swimming hole within Berkeley's rolling hills at Tilden Regional Park is still "absolutely beautiful," as one Tripadvisor reviewer stated. The reviewer added that you could "spend hours strolling around the lake" or simply "sitting and meditating on the beauty [there]."

As of this writing, Lake Anza is open between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays between May 16 and September 27, and the same operating hours apply on weekdays from June 1 to August 14. Whether you're looking to lounge on the sand and dip your toes in the water or walk along Lake Anza's scenic banks, a peaceful respite awaits in this neck of California's woods.

Enjoy the warmth of a sandy beach right at Lake Anza

Lake Anza sits in the heart of Tilden Regional Park, which spans over 2,000 acres, and its waters largely come downstream from Wildcat Creek. The reservoir is bordered by dense redwoods, oaks, and other trees to give the place a tranquil, secluded atmosphere. Aside from being easy on the eyes, the lush vegetation at Lake Anza also helps shelter it from wind gusts. Its small sandy beach, which spans about 70 yards, is situated at the lake's southwest shore. Given the lake's cool, refreshing waters, the beach at Lake Anza is said to be an "awesome place for a hot summer day," according to a reviewer on Tripadvisor.

It's worth noting that Lake Anza can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. When the swimming area reaches maximum capacity, it gets closed off to additional guests, so you may want to get there early to ensure you snag a spot on the sand. Be sure to check the beach conditions before taking a dip — as with many lakes, water safety here can vary due to blue-green algae levels. You can check the East Bay Regional Park District's safety advisories for Lake Anza on its website, where you'll also find general safety tips for lake swimming. These include preventing water from getting in your mouth and avoiding swimming in a lake for at least three days following heavy rainfall.

Take in the scenery as you sprawl under the sun on the beach, or sit yourself down for some lunch at a picnic area with tables that overlook the lake water. If you find yourself there without any food of your own, not to worry — you can grab a pick-me-up or a light refreshment at Lake Anza's on-site beach cafe, which sells a variety of snacks and beverages.

Take a stroll all around the peaceful waters of Lake Anza

Lake Anza lies just outside of Berkeley, one of California's most walkable destinations, but there are plenty of places to enjoy a stroll right at the reservoir. The Lake Anza Loop, which is less than three quarters of a mile long, circles the entirety of the calm Lake Anza waters. Despite its length, it's a moderately challenging jaunt on account of its rocky sections and steep inclines. The trail can also get muddy after it rains, so be sure to watch your step as you trudge along.

Some visitors have also noted that the hiking paths around Lake Anza can get overgrown. However, the East Bay Regional Park District is currently undergoing various vegetation management projects aimed at clearing out heavy brush and other debris throughout Tilden Regional Park. This initiative is meant to help reduce wildfire risks, though it would naturally also yield an improved hiking experience for visitors. The work is slated to be done by December 2026, but until then, you can expect to run into intermittent road and trail closures at the park.

Once you've had your fill of the reservoir, Tilden Regional Park has other fun attractions to check out, including a botanical garden, a small petting farm, and a 6,294-yard championship golf course. You can also take in views of towering redwoods aboard the Tilden Park Steam Train, California's coastal train that runs along the Redwood Valley Railway.

The Girl With The 'D' Earring

You might be trying to connect the dots as to why "The Girl With The 'D' Earring" looks so familiar — that's because Detroit artist Sydney G. James mirrored her masterpiece after Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's "Girl With a Pearl Earring." It's located on the western wall of the Chroma building, a former industrial center that was renovated to be a creative space. The surface area spans nine stories and nearly 8,000 square feet. James created the piece to portray Black women as strong, confident individuals while challenging how she feels they have historically been represented in art.

Stevie Wonder

In one of the coolest neighborhoods in "The D," the downtown area, you'll discover a young Stevie Wonder painted on the south wall of the historic Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. The mural was done by English artist Richard Wilson, who started working on it on the singer's 69th birthday. Stevie Wonder moved to Detroit in the 1950s, where he was discovered in the Motown genre at just 11 years old. He topped the Billboard charts not too long after, with his single "Fingertips — Pt. 2." Wonder has paved the way for others in Motown, shining a light on Detroit's history.

Rosa Parks

Walking through downtown, you'll find hidden alleys with bold murals — and one of the neighborhood's most recognized is the one of Rosa Parks at the Rosa Parks Transit Center. The 400-foot-long mural, painted by Detroit artist Fel'le, honors the activist's decades of time when she called the city home. Here, she wrote several books and opened the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development. Her mural honors her legacy on the side of the transportation building in order to pay homage to her famously known fight for equality and freedom on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama.

J Dilla

Created for the BlkoutWalls Mural Festival in 2021, Victor Quinones collaborated with Michael Roy to paint a tribute to J Dilla on the corner of Holbrook and Oakland Ave. in North End Detroit. The mural shows a portrait of the rapper and a donut, in homage to his second studio album named after the pastry. The vibrant pink wall honors a rapper who put the Michigan metropolis' underground hip hop scene on a global map. He was known for producing swing beats, a rhythmic style that's shaped the genre today. While he passed away in 2006, he lived in Detroit for the majority of his life.

Aretha Franklin

Desiree Kelly, a Detroit artist, splashed a portrait of Aretha Franklin at America's largest historic public market, the Eastern Market. The singer grew up in town, learning her craft in gospel singing from New Bethel Baptist Church. The mural commemorates the "Queen of Soul" and celebrates her legacy with a vivid pink backdrop and colorful kaleidoscope glasses. Visiting it is an easy way to experience two of the city's defining attractions at once: a world-class work of art as well as the Eastern Market.

Step Into The Future

Local graffiti artist Sintex painted a 178-square-foot mural at Harry Laker Park. The mural reads, "Step into the future Detroit ... We live on ..." The boy pictured above was the grandson of a local woman who lost his life in the neighborhood. Beyond the local heroes, there are many details in the full mural that represent the city, such as the automotive scene and Cartier — a brand name that became popular in town because of the car industry's economic benefits. It also gives representation to Muslims, as Detroit has one of the most prominent populations of the demographic in the U.S.

Hidden among the forests of eastern Pennsylvania is a sight that feels more at home in the British Isles than the Appalachians. Upwards of 90 stone megaliths stand throughout Columcille Megalith Park in the hilly Lehigh Valley, hence why it gets called the "Stonehenge of Pennsylvania." While the park's standing stones and assorted mysterious structures may evoke an ancient archaeological site, Columcille is a much more recent creation. It does, however, draw from ancient monuments and Celtic mythology, as much a cultural site as it is a fantastical one. On top of that, a few miles of trails coil around the park's monuments and through woods, making it a peaceful, if offbeat, stop to take in the outdoors.

The roughly 20-acre Columcille Megalith Park began as a parcel of forest and a house between Allentown and Scranton. Bill Cohea Jr. bought the land in the 1970s, envisioning it as a culmination of his spiritual experiences on the Scottish island of Iona. Cohea and his partner would shape the land to resemble the prehistoric and early Christian landscapes of the British Isles. They built a chapel directly modeled after one on Iona, erected a bell tower, and raised nearly 100 stones (many found on the property), arranging them in circles. The park hinges on both its natural environment and Celtic influences, with regular Celtic ceremonies and celebrations held on site. Visitors can come to experience a touch of ancient tradition while remaining in the woodlands of Pennsylvania.

Walk among woods and stones at Columcille Megalith Park

Rather than gathering its monuments in one place, Columcille Megalith Park has them scattered across its landscape. As such, the best way to appreciate the park's full scope is to take on some of its walking trails. The trails weave through a mix of woods and rock-studded meadows. Reviewers frequently commend the calm feel of the park. "An amazing place to spend an hour relaxing walking through interesting stones and structures. Hills abound and a nice place to hike as well," a Google Maps reviewer said. While the individual trails aren't long — AllTrails puts one loop at under 1 mile — they are unpaved and can be rocky or uneven in places.

What makes the trails unique at Columcille Megalith Park is the mix of natural scenery and the placed monuments throughout. At one bend, you might find a ring of stones around a pond. At another, you could come across a moss-covered dolmen among the trees. Some other features you might discover include a labyrinth, a stone chapel, and an oak grove. Keep an eye out for wildlife — some previous visitors reported deer sightings, while eBird lists the park as a hotspot for birds like warblers, sparrows, and woodpeckers. The trails of Columcille also connect to the Appalachian Trail via a spur trail. If you're planning a longer trek, it helps to know the best time of year to hike the Appalachian Trail.

Echoes of Celtic traditions at Columcille Megalith Park

While not ancient like Stonehenge, Columcille captures some of the wonder and mythic nature of the ancient monument. Steven Putzel, President of the Board of Directors of Columcille, told 6abc Philadelphia, "The stones have gone up for the same reasons, some of the same reasons, that the stones in Stonehenge went up. It's a way of centering people ... these stones are linked into the earth and reach to the sky." The park brings its spiritual influences to life with events like a Celtic prayer bundle ceremony and full moon yoga. It also hosts an annual, torch-lit Celtic New Year celebration (Samhuinn) at the end of October.

The park is open every day, and it's free to visit. If you want a souvenir to take with you from Columcille, there's a small gift shop selling different gemstones and merchandise. The park is just under an hour by car from either Allentown or Scranton. It's located in the borough of Bangor, a community dotted with eateries and vineyards to explore if you stick around longer. If you're interested in more fun events, you could pair a park trip with a visit to East Stroudsburg, a Poconos destination packed with festivals, around a 15-minute drive away.

The sprawling Yellowstone National Park may be home to the largest free-roaming bison herd in the United States, but it's not the only place in the country where you can see the burly beasts roaming wild and free. The Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area in southwest Kansas also has a pretty neat claim to fame, boasting the oldest publicly owned herd of bison in the entire state. 

Tucked away in the Midwest, right in the heart of the Great Plains, the range's rolling grassland views are quite spectacular. The 3,760-acre nature preserve has been around for a while — previously part of the now-defunct Kansas National Forest, the property dates back more than a century, according to the range's official visitor brochure. 

The Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area isn't currently open to self-guided tours. Instead, you have to reserve a guided excursion, which are usually available from March through October. But on the flip side, this helps keep the place from getting too crowded — unlike Yellowstone, which draws millions of tourists each year. As one visitor wrote in a Tripadvisor review of their trip to the Kansas range, it was so quiet that "The only sounds to be heard were the light breeze rustling the dry prairie grass and the bison munching."

See the burly beasts of the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area

Seeing bison freely roaming the Kansas range is pretty remarkable, as the giant grazers almost disappeared from the face of the Great Plains after they were hunted to near-extinction back in the 1800s, largely for their hides. Thanks to recovery efforts, the animals were eventually brought back from the brink. Bison were reintroduced to the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area in the mid-1920s. The herd numbered around 100 in the 1980s, but its size has varied over the years due to bad droughts and other conditions, occasionally dipping to fewer than two dozen bison. Today, you'll most commonly find herd sizes between 80 and 100. 

This stretch of prairie could easily rank among the best parks to see bison roam, other than Yellowstone. Guided tours of the range have a bit of a safari feel, allowing you to get up close to the massive bovine. "Eventually, we spotted a small herd, drove up close, cut the ignition, and then sat there, marveling at the magnificent beasts," wrote one visitor on Tripadvisor. It's important to note that bison can be dangerous when encountered in the wild, so follow your guide's instructions at all times and always keep a safe distance between yourself and the animal. The herd is contained within a high-voltage electric fence, so be sure to keep a safe distance away from the barrier, too.

Other species to see in the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area

The Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area hugs the winding Arkansas River, one of the longest rivers in America. It's also right on the outskirts of Garden City, also known as the "Heartbeat of the High Plains," a subregion of the sweeping Great Plains. The wildlife area protects this unique region, which is one of the last remaining plots of native sandsage prairie that hasn't been turned into farmland. 

In this part of Kansas, the patchwork of tall grasslands, made up of sand bluestem, giant sandreed, and sand lovegrass, along with the shrubby sand sagebrush, stretches out about as far as the eye can see. Depending on when you visit, you may also be able to take in the seasonal sunflower blooms that blanket the region.

During your trek through the range, you'll likely see a few other critters scurrying about. More than 100 species of birds have been recorded in the wildlife area, including greater roadrunners, lazuli buntings, and bald eagles, according to eBird. Lesser prairie chicken and scaled quail have also been seen in the preserve, along with mule deer, kangaroo rats, spotted ground squirrels, black-tailed jack rabbits, and western hognose snakes. Be sure to bring a good pair of binoculars, as you never know what animals might make an appearance during your visit.

Next to where North Carolina borders South Carolina on the coast, the Brunswick Islands are a peaceful beach destination known for their relaxed shores and charming seaside communities. Among its five islands, there's the pretty, car-less paradise of Bald Head Island and Holden Beach's web of serene bike paths. At the southernmost of these islands is Sunset Beach, with a small town and a distinctive fishing pier. About half of the island is taken up by the Bird Island Coastal Reserve, a protected area of salt marshes and creeks with flourishing wildlife. Cross along the shore of the reserve, and you'll eventually reach a curious mailbox standing in a dune-filled area devoid of any houses, known as the Kindred Spirit Mailbox.

The mailbox was first set up in the 1970s by former sweethearts Frank Nesmith and Claudia Sailor. The story goes that Sailor had a dream about a mailbox on the beach, so she made it a reality. The box was later moved to its present spot on Bird Island, which requires a small pilgrimage to get to. Inside, the mailbox has notebooks where visitors can share thoughts, dreams, or stories. For decades, Sailor herself would visit the mailbox, replace notebooks when they ran out of space, and keep the filled notebooks in her home. After Sailor died in 2013, the Kindred Spirit Mailbox has continued to be maintained by volunteers, and some notebooks are archived at the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Randall Library.

How to find the Kindred Spirit Mailbox

Given the Kindred Spirit Mailbox's location set apart from civilization, it takes a bit of sleuthing to find, though there are some indicators in place to help guide you. First, you can get to the Sunset Beach seashore, which is about an hour's drive from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. There's parking available by the beach for a fee, but it's free outside the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you're starting from the fishing pier, it's a little over two miles to reach the mailbox, and you have the option of walking or biking there. You could also start at the 40th Street beach access point, from which it's about one mile. Stick close to the shore, and eventually, you'll see mailbox sitting patiently in the dunes. There are also small benches next to it — grab a notebook, take a seat, and let your thoughts flow.

It's worth taking some time to explore around Sunset Beach's cozy oceanfront town, which is also one of America's best retirement destinations. The Bird Island Reserve is open for visitors all year, with finely granulated sand dunes, salt marshes, and a beach area that's a nesting area for sea turtles and shorebirds. Sunset Beach has multiple important stops on the North Carolina Birding Trail, so you might want to bring some binoculars. Afterward, grab some lunch at Fibber McGee's, highly rated on Tripadvisor, with an array of beers and bar food in an Irish pub setting.

Best — Portland International Airport (PDX)

As one of the most beautiful airports in the United States, it's no wonder Portland International Airport (PDX) was also named one of the nation's most stress-free places to fly. The top-notch customer experience here begins before passengers even get inside the terminal. The parking system at Portland International is efficient and easy. As one Reddit user shared, "I park at the airport up to 14 days a month. I just park in economy red or blue lot. Buses run every 5 minutes. Super simple."

One of the perks of parking at Portland International is the affordability factor, especially compared to many major airports. Economy parking costs $15 a day, with the aforementioned complimentary shuttle service running a maximum of 15 minutes apart overnight. The short-term lot, which is closest to the terminal, runs $30 daily, while long-term parking has a daily rate of $24. All three of these lots have an inexpensive $4 hourly rate for those running airport errands or picking up arrivals. Additionally, onsite valet parking costs $45 per day or $10 an hour.

The bang for your buck is just one reason to choose to park at PDX. As an added perk, travelers can pre-book their onsite parking spots for a cheaper rate.

Daily parking at Terminal 1 costs $32 if you prebook online, and passengers can access the terminal on foot using the enclosed skyway or via a one-minute tram ride. Meanwhile, Terminal 2's Value Parking runs $24 daily online, and travelers can use the complimentary light rail system to get to Terminal 1. The airport also has a Quick Ride Ramp parking option that serves as its economy lot. The daily rate is $20.50 when reserved online, and a no-cost shuttle bus to the terminal is available.

For travelers looking for offsite parking options when they fly out of this famously friendly Midwestern mega-airport, there are plenty of choices. Best — Kansas City International Airport (MCI)

When Kansas City International Airport (MCI) debuted in 1972, it was revolutionary. The facility's "Drive to Your Gate" design wasn't just a marketing gimmick; passengers had a short walk, with about 75 feet from their cars to their planes. As time passed, this once futuristic concept became outmoded, and a new terminal, with a new parking system, opened in 2023. The airport now features a sleek parking garage attached to the terminal, with helpful features like a green light above open spaces.

In both the covered garage and the nearby, open-air surface lot, travelers will pay $2 for the first 30 minutes, $4 for up to one hour, and an extra $4 hourly for a maximum of four hours (surface lot) or six hours (garage). The maximum daily rate for the surface lot is $20, while the garage is capped at $28 per day. Kansas City's economy lot is incredibly affordable, rivaling Indianapolis with the same low $9 a day rate. Economy drivers can access the terminal via a convenient shuttle service.

One unique thing about Kansas City International is its Fly KC parking rewards program. Frequent travelers can register to earn points that can be redeemed for free parking! For those interested in off-site parking options, Park Air Express provides valet parking from $10 per day, though more expensive rates can be incurred depending upon the options one chooses. One Park Air Express fan on Google raved, "Absolutely love this place! Easy to access from the interstate, quick and friendly customer service, great price."

Worst — Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

Very few American airports are as infamous as Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). LAX was the globe's 13th busiest airport by passenger volume in 2025, so it's no surprise that simply getting here can be a debacle. Many problems stem from the airport's horseshoe-shaped roads. Approximately 96,000 cars a day come to LAX, and the U-shaped road creates massive amounts of congestion. In a Wall Street Journal report, LAX was called "the worst of both worlds" due to an unfortunate combination: poor public transit compared to places like New York City and too few lanes for effective traffic flow.

The growing popularity of ride share services like Lyft and Uber has also posed a problem. Drivers waiting to pick up their riders use valuable road space, causing further congestion in already crowded areas. Ongoing construction here is another issue that can lead to delays for people trying to park. The cost of parking is yet another pain point. LAX is notoriously expensive, so much so that Allegiant Airlines was even completely priced out of their Los Angeles terminal. Even the airport's economy lot costs $35 per day, while garages and valet service closer to the terminals range from $70 to $75 daily.

Each lot also has hourly parking that costs from $9 to $11 for the first hour, with fractional rates thereafter. People on Reddit also report waiting much longer than advertised for the economy shuttle. If you have to drive yourself to LAX, consider a hotel lot with its own shuttle, such as the Hilton. You can also save time while navigating the nightmare that is LAX by using the airport's FlyAway bus. Or, as one Redditor suggested, avoid Los Angeles International altogether and choose Orange County's John Wayne Airport: "If you want less stress, fly into SNA."

Worst — John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is both a passenger and commercial hub, with a near-constant influx and outflow of travelers and cargo. The sheer number of vehicles trying to go in and out of the airport complex at any given time leads to unavoidable congestion on the freeway, with the average trip from Manhattan to the airport taking 65 minutes. Construction is also an everyday reality around JFK, with road closures, detours, and changing traffic patterns unsurprisingly causing unexpected delays for people trying to park.

Cost is another notable drawback when it comes to parking here. JFK's long-term lot charges $39 per day in advance online or $55 at the gate. The lot at Terminal 5 costs $89 per day, drive-up or around $74 pre-booked, while the Terminal 8 lot runs $74 daily or about $62 online. The Terminal 4 lot is the most expensive, with a rather shocking daily rate of $94 at the gate or around $80 online. Each of the three terminal lots also has hourly drive-up rates, starting between $4 and $6 for up to 30 minutes, and increasing fractionally from there. The reservation-only Federal Circle lot is another option, with rates around $55 per day. One nice feature at John F. Kennedy is the AirTrain, which connects passengers from all parking lots to all terminals and local MTA stations.

Travelers looking to save money may want to consider off-site parking options endorsed by airport officials. SmartPark has its own shuttle service, and sometimes runs specials like a free seventh day of parking. Meanwhile, AirPark JFK is now part of the airport's own long-term parking service. Although it maintains its own website where reservations can be made, guests who choose this option are eligible for points through JFK's official parking reward program. If possible, however, taking the AirTrain via public transit is the simplest way to get to and from New York City's busiest air travel complex.

Worst — Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has developed an incredibly negative reputation among travelers, and it was even named the nation's worst large airport in a 2025 J.D. Power report. A much-cited iSelect study also named EWR the most stressful airport in America, specifically calling it out for frequent flight delays and traffic problems before even arriving at the airport complex. In short, if you have to drive yourself to Newark, the first thing you should do is pack your patience.

Traffic, as we just mentioned, is among the biggest challenges with parking here. One Redditor said they are tired of having "to navigate the absolute gauntlet of aggressive drivers, confusing lanes, and airport police rushing you along," all while dealing with poorly maintained roads. Since Newark serves the single busiest metropolitan area in the United States, it's not surprising that the roads surrounding the terminal are busy and mazelike, but it is undeniably frustrating for travelers. Parking at EWR doesn't come cheaply, either, especially compared to places like IND and MCI.

The economy lot is $30 per day when pre-booked or $35 at the gate. Passengers who park here can take a periodic shuttle that runs 24/7 to the terminal. The short-term parking lot at Terminal A has a $65 daily drive-up rate or about $50 online. Hourly parking up to 30 minutes costs $5.25, with a $10.50-per-30-minute surcharge after that. Similarly, the short-term lot for Terminals B and C has the same online and hourly rates, but its day rate is capped slightly higher at $70. Offsite parking options include Park King Place, which has rates starting at $11.99 daily.

Worst — Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)

Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is almost too busy for the mind to comprehend. In 2025, it was the most bustling airport on the globe, with a plane leaving or landing the equivalent of every 37 seconds! That said, it's easy to grasp why parking at this massive airport complex was never going to be simple. Flight delays, complicated roads leading into and out of the airport, parking rates, and the sheer size of the airport all play into the stressful experience many travelers have here. If you have to drive yourself to O'Hare, part of the parking challenge lies in just figuring out which lot is right for you.

There are three economy lots, ranging from $16 to $30 for a 24-hour period, with hourly rates also available. The Airport Transit System's trains provide complimentary service to all terminals. The main garage, which is adjacent to the terminal, costs $43 daily with lower hourly rates. Interestingly, the posted hourly rate for eight to 24 hours is $79, so paying for the daily rate upfront if you think you might need it is significantly cheaper. Daily parking is also available in an uncovered surface lot for $43 maximum.

While it is possible to reserve onsite parking online, it's not uncommon for O'Hare flyers to book parking at third-party locations near the airport. One Reddit user recommended the airport Hyatt, noting that if you stay there the night before your flight, it "includes 10 days of parking. It's $10/day after that. They have covered parking and regular shuttles to/from the airport." Another Redditor recommended skipping the process altogether, sharing that it costs about the same as a few days of parking charges anywhere to "have a car service pick your family up and help you unload the bags at the curbside check-in."

Worst — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)

Although it was ranked the busiest airport in the world in 2025, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ATL) is generally quite efficient, that is, once you're inside the terminal. Its elaborate Plane Train subway system and well-designed layout make it relatively painless for passengers, despite moving over 8.6 million travelers annually! The biggest frustration here often comes when they're trying to park, well before ever hitting the airport's front doors.

The Atlanta airport's parking situation has become dire enough that local news networks have covered the problem, with some travelers saying they've driven around for multiple hours trying to find a single empty spot. Unsurprisingly, parking offsite, even several miles away, and taking a third-party shuttle, is a common solution here. WallyPark offers surface lot parking from $14.65 daily and covered spaces starting at $16.55 per day. Cheaper member rates are also available for frequent travelers. Rightway Parking has even less expensive rates, beginning at just $6.55 a day. Local rideshare services or having a friend or relative drop you off at the airport are also options in Atlanta, of course.

If you are determined to park on site, there are 11 different lots at various pricing tiers. Be aware, however, that passengers on Facebook report the process to be "inconvenient and overpriced." The economy lots cost a maximum of $20 daily, the regular lots and ATL West Deck are priced at $30 per day, and the domestic flight park and ride service is $15 ($30 for international flights). The ATL Select Deck, meanwhile, has its own daily pricing structure that costs $15 for an uncovered space, $20 for a covered one, and $40 for oversized vehicles. Hourly rates for domestic and international travelers are capped at $50 and $75 for the first 24 hours, and $75 and $100 for subsequent days.

These days, wherever you may roam, other tourists are almost sure to be found. While not every place is as heavily trodden as the rest, some destinations may surprise you with just how many tourists they welcome each year. Andorra, a small European country in the Southern Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, has a shocking amount of tourists-to-locals ratio, according to various data sources. Most recently, Visual Capitalist compared UN Tourism data via Our World in Data with population figures from the World Bank and found that Andorra's annual international tourists outnumber its local residents almost 51 to 1.

Andorra came out on top of Visual Capitalist's list, exceeding second-place Monaco's ratio by over five times. But this ratio looks modest compared to that found by Go2Africa, which determined Andorra sees 117 tourists for every local after analyzing 2025 data from tourism boards and international organizations. Unlike Visual Capitalist, Go2Africa included same-day foreign visitors with international tourists when determining the total number. On this list, Andorra was second only to Vatican City, which receives over 7,700 tourists per local and is world famous for being Europe's smallest country with just over 500 residents.

This vast disparity between tourist and resident numbers is exactly why Andorra's local population is so heavily outnumbered. It's one of Europe's smallest countries, covering about 180 square miles and containing just over 83,700 people. Combine that small size and population with 9.6 million annual visitors, and the density of tourists becomes very overwhelming. For travelers who enjoy discovering relatively untouched destinations, this could be a dealbreaker. Yet Andorra's tourism numbers continue to grow. One reason for this is its breathtaking mountain scenery and fun winter activities.

Mountain beauty, sports, and shopping in Andorra

Andorra's location in the Pyrenees Mountains lends it some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery. You'll find 65 summits here, all of which rise higher than 6,500 feet. People flock here around June for summer solstice celebrations, while others visit all summer long to explore the biodiverse Ordino Valley. Hikers can experience a lot of Andorra's diverse natural beauty by trekking the 57-mile Coronallacs Trail, a hidden gem hike. The mountainous route is physically challenging but also provides deep immersion in Andorra's unspoilt nature, including lakes, valleys, and views of mountains like Comapedrosa, the country's highest peak.

Andorra doesn't have its own airport, so visitors usually fly to France or Spain and enter the country via car. Many stay in Andorra la Vella, the country's capital city, which is renowned for having great shopping. Duty-free shopping is particularly prevalent in this city and is why Rick Steves says Andorra has the charm of a "giant shopping mall." The Philadelphia metro area is a desirable location nestled in the heart of the mid-Atlantic corridor. For families, one of the best townships within these suburbs is Upper Merion. Fortune Magazine even ranked it as the second best place to live for families — outranked only by Silver Spring, Maryland. Upper Merion Township is only 20 miles from the heart of Philadelphia and features everything from city convenience to lush green space and world-class shopping. 

Upper Merion was first settled in the 17th century by Swedish immigrants, and today, remnants of this identity can be found in borough village names like Swedesburg and Swedeland. The township is also home to the Revolutionary War battleground of Valley Forge National Historic Park, which is visited by over 1.9 million people annually. Discovering Columbus' historic charm and walkable downtown

Wild West sagas and pioneer tales are mapped out on the Lincoln Highway, a history-steeped scenic byway across Nebraska, and Columbus is part of it. The city offers visitors a downtown full of historic charm that Walk Score rates as not only walkable, but somewhat bikeable, too.

Columbus has a long history that dates back to the 19th century, when it was established as a strategically located community with rich soil. Today, you can experience a piece of its past by visiting the Trackside District in downtown. One of the most important pieces of heritage you'll come across is the traditional architecture, characterized by ornate cornices and brick walls. There are almost 20 buildings scattered across the neighborhood, and you can easily organize a self-guided tour. The Platte County Courthouse, Glur's Tavern, and Evans Hotel are among the must-sees, though those who want to learn even more about the region's history can stop by the Platte County Historical Society Museum, as well. Located a 7-minute walk from the courthouse, this is a gem featuring exhibits of local Native American artifacts, Victorian clothing, 1850s furnishings, and more.

Another 7-minute walk takes you to Picket Fence Cafe, a popular local spot serving classic breakfast dishes, sandwiches, and fresh pies since 1992. Visitors compliment the small-town feel and homemade taste. In the mood for some second-hand shopping? Cottonwood Antique Mall is just less than ten minutes away, with local vendors selling collectibles, records, and more. Even though it's a landlocked Midwestern state, Nebraska is a surprising haven for snorkeling and scuba diving, and Columbus promises its own version of waterfront fun. It's a great fishing spot for brown and rainbow trout, and it also serves as a beautiful backdrop to some of the area's hiking trails. 

Pawnee Park, in particular, is a great example of that. The park itself spans over 150 acres and features baseball diamonds, disc golf courts, electrical hookups, a stadium, and fishing ponds. Among all that, the trails receive a lot of compliments from visitors. They're paved and stroller-friendly, surrounded by beautiful views. There's also a water park nearby that's reasonably priced and entertaining.  While the Pawnee Park Trail only partially follows the Loup River, there's an even longer pathway that goes right along it. Named after the river itself, this is a 3.5-mile stretch that takes an hour to complete thanks to its easy nature. It's a great choice for those looking to enjoy the waterfront scenery without too much hassle, but be warned that there isn't a lot of shade along the way. Another great path to consider for waterfront views is the Two Lakes Trail. It follows Lake North and Lake Babcock, and offers some great birdwatching opportunities.

For 78 years, the battlements of Fort Macaulay defended the southeastern shores of Vancouver Island. Generations of servicemen stood watch there, looking out for foreign navies that might have decided to attack the western fringe of Canada. The post was active from 1878 to 1956, although staff were likely on their highest guard around the time the site was first built, since tensions between the British Empire and Czarist Russia were notably high in the late 19th century. However, throughout its entire history, Fort Macaulay was never once attacked.

The site was transformed into Macaulay Point Park in 1985, nearly 30 years after Fort Macaulay was officially decommissioned in 1956. Now, it's a public green space with several paved pathways, and many park visitors go there to admire the underrated views of the vast Strait of Juan de Fuca that forms part of the Salish Sea. Located in the suburb of Esquimalt, Macaulay Point Park is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. The grounds are free to visit and open during daylight hours year round.

Wartime fortifications, including concrete batteries (pictured above), several outbuildings, and underground bunkers, still pepper the park. The batteries may strike visitors as haunting — their stained, cracked, and worn concrete walls lend the buildings a brutalist quality. Moreover, many thresholds at the fort disappear into dark recesses and tunnels, and the park's atmosphere takes something of a gothic turn on gray and rainy days. But similar to how British Columbia's most fascinating ghost town is kept alive with museums and vintage trolleys, Macaulay Point Park gets much of its character from its rugged buildings and dark covered passageways.

Walk and climb your way through the historic structures at Macaulay Point Park

Despite the old fort's weathered buildings, Macaulay Point Park itself is a lovely place to explore. Visitors can walk along trails that run about a mile and a half through the park, and since they're paved, it's easy to traverse them by bike, stroller, or wheelchair. Leashed pets are also welcome at the park, making it an appealing spot for dog walking. You'll know you've made it to the park's entrance when you spot a decorative anchor statue in front of a whimsical seal mural, which sits in contrast to the stark batteries that lie amidst cleanly mown grass, bushes, and wooden fences.

If you're staying in downtown Victoria where most of the area's hotels are, it's quite easy to travel to Macaulay Point Park either by car or by bus. Victoria is known as the brunch capital of Canada, so consider following up a pancake stack or a serving of eggs Benedict with a foray into a relic of Canada's wartime past. The park makes for a surprisingly peaceful escape from the city, and it's all the more enticing for fans of architecture and military history. You can poke around the old structures as much as you please, all the while picturing what martial life might have been like for those in decades past. Fort Macaulay was never a battleground, so it's remained intact since it was built. However, coupled with vast seaside landscapes, many of the fort's rugged building exteriors make for some hauntingly beautiful sights.

Hike and bike scenic mountain trails in the Heber Valley

Surrounded by the peaks and valleys of the Wasatch Mountains, Heber City has an extensive network of trails on its doorstep. There are more than 400 miles of hiking and cycling routes in the valley, ranging from short family-friendly nature strolls to challenging treks through rugged mountain terrain. The abundance of trails and scenic views suggests that Heber City might be one of the most underrated towns in the Mountain West for outdoor enthusiasts.

In nearby Wasatch Mountain State Park, just west of Heber City, hikers and bikers have plenty of options with over 40 miles of trails to discover. The 10-mile WOW Trail is a favorite downhill mountain course for two-wheeled explorers from May to October, while the 15-mile out-and-back Deer Creek Trail gives hikers scenic views of the Deer Creek Reservoir, with the Heber Valley train trundling by. For an easier hike suitable for families and wildlife lovers, the Cascade Springs Interpretative Trail is a short boardwalk loop surrounded by nature. Visitors have seen otters and beavers here, as well as fish in the peaceful ponds.

Meanwhile, up in Jordanelle State Park, just to the north of Heber City, the Coyote Canyon Loop is a challenging 23.2-mile bike trail, with views out across the valley from the mountain foothills. A shorter, more kid-friendly hike in this area is the flat Provo River Trail, which is less than 2 miles and follows the riverbank with views of Mount Timpanogos from the shoreline. The Utah's Adventure Family blog recommends doing this hike in the morning, when there's more shade during summer. 

Ride the historic Heber Valley Railroad in vintage carriages

If you're into history as well as mountain scenery, a ride on the Heber Valley Railroad is a unique way to explore the area. This green valley feels like a little Europe with scenic towns and lakes that give it an alpine vibe. Seeing the landscape reveal itself from the railway carriage is a unique experience. Known locally as "The Heber Creeper," this is the only historic railroad in Utah. Visitors can enjoy a ride on this heritage train, with regular departures from the depot in Heber City. Seats are generally preassigned, so make sure everyone in your group is booked on the same order so you can sit together.

The scenic train route through the valley crosses the Provo River, with views of the Wasatch Mountains throughout the journey. Visitors ride in vintage passenger cars pulled by a steam locomotive on an excursion straight out of the history books. As one Tripadvisor user comments, "The ride is scenic, relaxing, and has that cool old-fashioned train vibe that makes the whole thing feel special." Moose, eagles, and deer are sometimes seen from the carriage, so keep your eyes peeled. You'll pass the Deer Creek Reservoir, too, where birds like ospreys and cranes like to hang out.

Themed journeys put a unique spin on some of the railroad rides, with wine and cheese tastings, sing-alongs, and train trivia evenings all enjoyed on board. Some trips focus on the kids, like the Princess and Pirate Train, featuring costumed hosts and entertainment, and a journey centered around a certain boy wizard sure to be a hit with "Harry Potter" fans. For a bit of festive flair, seasonal journeys with live entertainment on board include the family-friendly North Pole Express in winter and the Halloween Express in October. A drive through north-central Indiana's farmland eventually reveals rows of apple trees that have drawn visitors for decades. Here, in the charming town of Peru, McClure's Orchard makes for a versatile stop for kids and adults alike. There's the apple orchard, where families can pick their own freshly ripened apples and hop on a trolley tour through the groves. For adults, the estate's winery offers tastings that include some unique sips like a cider fermented with jalapeños or sweet blackberry wine. With both options in the same location, that means you could spend a morning collecting Pink Lady apples and top off with an afternoon hard cider tasting in a single outing — with plenty more to do in between.

The McClure's trees have a surprisingly deep history. They started as a few dozen apple trees planted around World War I, according to the farm news reporter AGDAILY. The McClure family took over the orchard in 1999, expanding it to have around 6,500 trees and over 100 varieties in total. They branched out into winemaking about a decade after opening. Even with its abundance of produce to attend to, McClure's Orchard has positioned itself as a destination that welcomes visitors. "A big part of what we do is try to get families outside," Jason McClure, one of the orchard's owners, told AGDAILY. The property has a few touches that make it different from your standard orchard — a trolley ride that takes you through apples and pumpkins galore, a band playing live music on some weekends, or a farm shop selling honey and applesauce.

Picking and tasting at McClure's Orchard

The day's main event for many visitors at McClure's Orchard begins once the trolley sets off. The tractor-pulled trolley is a fun ride in itself, earning a fair amount of love from past visitors on Google Maps — one visitor calls it a "fall favorite for [their] family." The ride takes you out into the orchard, where you can pick your own apples or pumpkins. Apple picking season runs from mid-July to early November, while the pumpkin patch is open during the fall.

McClure's Orchard harvests aren't all just for show. The farm turns its apples, pumpkins, and more into yummy products. At the hilltop Apple Barn, you'll find variations of apple cider, applesauce, pies, and honey. Look for a few more special treats at the Cider House & Bake Shop building nearest to the orchard entrance. Here, you'll find apple dumplings, as well as warm pastries served with ice cream, which are a favorite among previous visitors. The building also houses the orchard's wine and cider tasting bar. Adults can sample from a vast selection that includes honey-fermented wine, dry red wines, traditional hard ciders, and even jalapeño ciders (which won an award at the 2026 Indiana Brewers' Cup Competition).

Whether you're coming for one of McClure's U-pick days or to stock up on fresh farm products, getting there is straightforward from nearby cities. The orchard is about an hour away from South Bend by car, or an hour and a half from Indianapolis. Stick around in Peru a little longer, and you can check out the International Circus Hall of Fame, one of the most underrated museums in Indiana. To extend your adventure, consider driving to Daleville, a family-friendly riverside town for floating, fishing, and paddling.

From aviation museums to unique roadside sights, Dayton is home to many premier attractions. And a lot of these places are hiding in plain sight, such as Eastwood MetroPark. You might think that this is just another city park for picnicking, but this scenic, 437-acre spot caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. From lakefront activities like boating and fishing to hiking and biking (and even camping, if you manage to secure the single available site), the free-to-enter park is minutes away from Downtown Dayton.

Featuring many multi-use paths, Eastwood MetroPark allows you to stroll along flat walking loops, lengthy cycling tracks, and sections of famous long-distance trails. There's a lot to observe along the way — from abundant birdlife soaring overhead to river otters and beavers by the water. Speaking of, the park is home to the 185-acre Eastwood Lake, where the whole family can set afloat on the water and take advantage of boating opportunities. From jet-skiing and kayaking to spotting wildlife, everyone can enjoy a range of both calm and thrilling activities.

Not only that, but you can cast a line into the lake to see what'll bite. This isn't the only place you can fish at the park — the Mad River, the Blue Lake, and the lagoon are popular, too. You can't forget about picnicking, geocaching, and winter sports opportunities, either. With so much to do in one place, a visitor described their experience, saying, "Whether you're looking for a place to relax or engage in active recreation, Eastwood MetroPark has something to offer everyone." Simply drive 5 miles northeast of downtown or take the Route 6 bus to get to the park.

Enjoy the aquatic amenities at Eastwood MetroPark

There are several vacation spots that are an easy day trip from Dayton, but exploring in your own backyard can be just as much fun. Eastwood MetroPark has a number of boating and fishing areas, perfect for families seeking out lake and riverfront fun. Eastwood Lake sees a lot of action, with rules changing by odd and even calendar days to accommodate different types of boaters. On odd-numbered days, bring your own watercraft to cruise on the lake. You'll see some sailboats out on the west side of the lake on those days, sharing the space with jet skiers.

On even-numbered days, water-skiers flaunt their skills and wakeboarders make a splash. You'll hear the roar of motorboats cutting through the waves, too. Although motorized boats have no horsepower limits, they must operate at a maximum of 35 mph. Those who simply wish to kayak or canoe will be happy to know that there are no restrictions. If you're scared of paddling here, you can launch your kayak into Blue Lake, which is much smaller and easier to navigate. Another option is the lagoon, great for first-time paddlers. Test your rowing skills while touring its islands. As for those who want to tackle Class II rapids, the Mad River provides a 4-mile journey.

All mentioned bodies of water allow fishing. If you don't have an Ohio fishing license, stick to the lagoon and Blue Lake — and if you do, feel free to set your rod on the Mad River and Eastwood Lake. The former is teeming with bass varieties like rock, smallmouth, and largemouth (it's also the region's only trout stream). Meanwhile, anglers at Eastwood Lake can catch crappie, saugeye, walleye, and catfish, among other species. Unfortunately, swimming is off the table at Eastwood.

Explore the pathways that snake through the park

When you're off the water, check out the paths at Eastwood MetroPark. There are two long-distance trails that pass directly through the park boundaries. One of them is America's longest official national scenic trail, the North Country Trail, which explores colorful cities from Vermont to North Dakota. You can trek a small portion of its 4,600-plus-mile length, which leads you from the lagoon along the Mad River.

The other long-distance trek is the Buckeye Trail, the country's longest loop that takes hikers to 47 counties across 1,400-plus miles. Before those numbers freak you out, you'll be traversing only 2.7 miles of the trail at Eastwood MetroPark. While backpackers attempting its entirety should read up on warning signs that a hiking route isn't beginner-friendly, others can relax, knowing that the Eastwood portion is easy and relatively flat. With an elevation gain of just 39 feet, hikers can complete the loop in less than an hour. Simply follow the blue painted blazes that guide the journey for both trails.

Besides hiking, you can bike along the paved tracks. The Mad River Trail takes you not only to Eastwood, but also to RiverScape and Huffman MetroPark. While the full trail extends for 6.6 miles, a specific 2-mile, out-and-back segment of it is designated as the Track Trail, ideal for family-friendly strolls with prairie and flower views. The paved surface offers convenient and stroller-friendly walks. Back to biking: The 17.8-mile Creekside Trail is worth cycling, too, which starts at Eastwood and makes its way to Xenia Station in Greene County. If you've been curious about bikepacking, an exciting type of camping exploration that's growing in popularity, you can reserve the park's sole campsite, which has space for two tents.

Hear the words "Death Valley" and it's likely that images of inhospitable, sun-scorched deserts spring to mind — this is one of the few national parks you'd be wise to avoid visiting in the summer because of the extreme heat, after all. But this boiling corner of the U.S.A. — the most boiling corner of the U.S.A, in fact — remains an enthralling stop for travelers in search of true frontiers. You can come to stand on the lowest-altitude point in North America, cozy up in the gateway village of Stovepipe Wells, or delve into unique mining history at the open-air museum that is the Harmony Borax Works.

A lot of people don't know that Death Valley underwent its very own mining boom in the mid-1800s. As the rest of California went mad for gold, prospectors here had their eye on rich mineral deposits known as borax, and the Harmony Borax Works was one of the first commercial mining ventures in the region. It started life in 1883, but was abandoned by the turn of the century. Today, visitors are welcome to walk amid the remains of the operation, which still stand between the canyons and dust hills in the heart of the national park.

The good news is that these old borax mines don't demand a huge detour off the main driving routes through Death Valley. In fact, you'll find them just off the road, only a few minutes' drive north of Furnace Creek — the area's main campground and visitor center. More generally, you're looking at upwards of two hours to get here from Las Vegas, which is also home to the nearest major airport, and just under two hours from the iconic Highway 395 on the California side.

Step into an outdoor museum at the Harmony Borax Works

Planning a visit to the Harmony Borax Works? Prepare to be transported back in time to an age when borax ore was pulled from the mountains of Death Valley before being processed right here on-site. At its height, the works employed an estimated 40 people who were tasked with collecting the mineral, boiling it, refining it, and then undertaking the mammoth job of transporting it a whopping 165 miles across the Mojave Desert.

Take the Harmony Borax Trail, a quarter-mile loop around the area, to uncover the rich history. It's packed with interpretive signs that reveal what life was like at the camp during the 1880s, and how the precious mineral was picked and prepared. You'll also see the remains of an iconic 20-mule-team — a long caravan of mules and donkeys that was designed to transport the finished borax out of the desert. There are also half-ruined adobe buildings once used as a refinery.

The whole site is free to enter, but you will have to purchase a pass to get into the Death Valley National Park itself. It should take around 30 minutes to complete the interpretive walk. That said, remember that it gets extremely hot in these parts, so walking anywhere after 10 a.m. isn't recommended.

Ireland and Scotland are incredible countries with a wealth of things for travelers to do and see. So much so that it's worth taking a separate trip just to visit each one. Travel expert Rick Steves certainly thinks so. In a post on his Facebook page, he says that his company, Rick Steves' Europe, originally tried to do a tour that hit both countries in one go. They no longer do that, and for good reason. He explains, "Considering how Americans have the shortest vacations in the rich world and how much there is to see in each country, the combo itineraries were either too thin or too long. These lands — filled with seductive charms — shouldn't be rushed." If you've ever been to either country (or both), you can surely see why. 

Ireland covers 32,500 square miles, and Scotland covers 30,414 square miles; the unique history, architecture, geography, dining, shopping, and, most importantly, the people of each country are far too much to take in if you're splitting up a single week of travel. Sure, you can get the highlights, but to truly experience each place, you need more time. Neither country is simply a conglomerate of the same thing everywhere; each boasts distinct and remarkable regions with their own unique character and charm. Instead, Steves suggests that, if you have the vacation saved up, you could string one of their week-long tours of each country together. That way, you get the best of both countries without sacrificing the time to properly get to know each place.

Visiting Ireland and Scotland and why they should be separate trips

If you have a week per, you'll get a lot out of visiting different regions of both Ireland and Scotland. For instance, Steves' favorite town in Ireland, Dingle, in the west of the country, is part of the Gaeltacht, which, he explains, "[is] a region where the government subsidizes the survival of the Irish language and culture." You can learn a lot about the past there. Then there's the eastern area of County Meath, where you can visit the 5,200-year-old Newgrange, which is older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge.

In Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom (as opposed to the Republic of Ireland), you can visit the Antrim Coast, which Steves also recommends, to see the impressive Giant's Causeway formation with its incredible legends. That doesn't even take us to Dublin, with St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Guinness Storehouse, the gloriously illuminated Book of Kells at Trinity College, and the iconic Ha'Penny Bridge for a view of the sunset.

In Scotland, visit the historic Edinburgh Castle, which began as an Iron Age hill fort and has the distinction of being the most besieged spot in all of Britain. You could tour the wild and beautiful locations where the popular series "Outlander" was filmed, including the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Linlithgow Palace, and Doune Castle, which is used as Castle Leoch in the show. For more set-jetting, drive up from Edinburgh to the charming city of Portree on the Isle of Skye, stopping on the way to visit Eilean Donan Castle, where "Highlander" and the James Bond movie "The World is Not Enough" were shot. You also can't miss a chance to spot the legendary sea monster Nessie at Loch Ness.

Every airline follows similar standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safety, security, and in-flight medical issues. These include measures like arming the doors before pushback, carrying out security checks throughout the aircraft, utilizing a first-aid kit for any medical emergencies onboard, and even describing what to do if an airplane door falls off mid-flight. Each airline may have its own protocols for actually executing these practices in order to comply with their own local aviation authorities. For example, all airlines in the United States must comply with the Federal Aviation Administration's regulations.

If a person dies on an aircraft mid-flight, the SOPs may vary from airline to airline, but cabin crew are trained to deal with these rare events (which is why there are unusual rules and requirements for being a flight attendant). The International Air Transport Association (IATA) includes a step-by-step guide for handling deaths onboard, but contains different steps depending on the resources available on the flight. 

For instance, if the airline carries a body bag, crew are trained to transport the deceased person to the galley or a more spacious area via an onboard wheelchair, and lay the corpse on the floor. Crew should zip the body bag up to the neck, as closing the body bag fully will indicate the person is officially pronounced dead. This would make documenting the death tricky as a place needs to be recorded, and an exact location cannot be accurately noted in the air. If a body bag is not available, the crew may be trained to use any resources that are available, like a plastic covering secured with duct tape.

What is the step-by-step protocol when a person dies mid-flight?

After communicating the death to the captain, and if no body bag is available, IATA states that the corpse should be relocated to a seat with fewer passengers nearby if available or in their own seat if the flight is full. The crew should then restrain the body with a seat belt to avoid falling during turbulence, close the eyes, and cover the person up to the neck with a blanket. After landing, fellow passengers should disembark first while the family of the deceased stays behind until ground medical staff arrive.

Although in-flight deaths are rare, in February 2025, a Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Venice had a passenger die mid-flight after collapsing. Following unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate her, the crew tried to wheel the corpse to business class but failed to fit the body through the aisles. They ultimately resorted to placing the woman's body in an empty seat next to an Australian couple. While the travelers commended the crew for their medical training, they were traumatized by having to sit next to the dead body for the remaining four hours of the flight, even though there were other empty seats available where they could've been relocated.

When barreling through the sky in a metal tube 38,000 feet in the air, resources are limited, and some passengers may find the airline's unexpected protocols as strange and insensitive. The first step for this is to ask your hotel's front desk for the name of local laundromats. Then, you'll need to plan your itinerary around a potential laundry day adventure. To do this, locate the launderette on your favorite map app, and then search for (and save) a few shops, a park, or a café nearby that you can visit while your clothes wash. Ideally, you'll want to pick the launderette with the best reviews and most interesting options nearby.

The Great Lakes State is home to a staggering 11,000 inland lakes and over 100 state parks — so it's only natural that some havens, like Thornapple Lake, fly under the radar. However, for those seeking a more laid-back getaway in Michigan's Lower Peninsula, it's certainly worth a closer look.

At one end of the lake sits the Thornapple Lake Nature Sanctuary, while the other shores host campgrounds, beaches, boat launches, and a historic park complete with a late 1800s model village and museum dedicated to pioneer life in rural Michigan. Whether you're looking to kayak through a wetland forest or hike in the woods, Thornapple Lake has the outdoor activities, water vibes, and just enough vacation amenities to balance the seclusion.

The lake sits an hour or less from both Lansing and Kalamazoo, while another Michigan hub, Grand Rapids, is also about an hour away. Being in the middle of some of the state's busiest cities means that Thornapple Lake is a convenient stop when traveling between more popular places, but it could also easily be a weekend getaway on its own. Visitors to Thornapple Lake will find various cabin rentals in the area, but for those hoping to camp by the water, there are two main options. On the southern shore lies Camp Thornapple, with over 140 sites ranging from full-hookup to primitive, a bathroom and shower building, swimming area, and a litany of other activities and amenities. To the west, just off the Thornapple River, you can find the Rivergate Family Campground. It's a cozy place featuring just 36 sites, but it has all of the campground essentials (water, electricity, showers, etc.) and also offers kayak or tube rentals, so visitors can cruise the river and lake. Both Rivergate and Camp Thornapple have earned excellent reviews on Google.

Whether staying the night or making a day trip, Thornapple Lake is a great destination to enjoy a casual day on the water. At 409 acres, the lake offers the space for all sorts of activities — and the multiple public access sites allow visitors to launch and spend the day boating, water skiing, kayaking, or fishing. Consider packing an affordable, portable fishing rod for your vacation because anglers will love the abundance of species in the lake, which includes walleye, northern pike, and muskie, many of which are actively managed and stocked.

While there are no major towns around the lake, plenty of homes and small developments have popped up along its perimeter over the years. Thankfully, 60 acres on the eastern shore were donated in 2009 and turned into the Thornapple Lake Nature Sanctuary. It's a floodplain forest, meaning the ground is often too soft for hiking trails or biking, so the sanctuary's main goal is to provide a protected area for wildlife, including rare birds like the cerulean warbler and American woodcock. Since there are no real trails, the sanctuary is best visited by drifting downriver in a canoe or kayak, listening to birdsong while sunlight filters through trees.

Historic parks and making the most of a visit to this Barry County gem

On the western side of Thornapple Lake is the Historic Charlton Park. Established back in 1936, this Barry County staple features over 300 acres of outdoor recreation, lakefront fun, and history. Entrance to the park is free, and visitors can enjoy two distinct vibes: historical or natural. If you want to relax in nature, stroll the few miles of hiking trails, soak up some sun on the beach, or launch your boat into the lake. To dive into a bit of history, there's the Irving D. Charlton Memorial Museum, which displays artifacts that were personally curated by, you guessed it, Irving Delos Charlton. There's also a historic village (pictured above) showcasing late 1800s life in mid-Michigan.

Before embarking on any adventures around the lake, you'll want to stock up on supplies. Amenities are scarce in the area, making Thornapple Lake Trading Post the best nearby option.
